The Atlanta Falcons have made a few interesting moves following a tryout period on early in the week during their mandatory minicamp, and the roster headed into training camp is going to look a little bit different.
Signing three players to deals on Wednesday, Atlanta has dipped into the spring football league pool and brought in defensive end Keshawn Banks , defensive tackle Devonnsha Maxwell and wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr., all of whom played last season in the UFL.
Roster space needed to be created, so three players were released including wide receiver Casey Washington , defensive tackle Elijah Garcia and defensive end CJ Nunnally IV.
All three new faces had nice seasons for their respective UFL clubs.
Falcons Three New UFL Players Had Solid Years
Banks played in 10 games for the Orlando Storm this past season and recorded 24 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks, making a legitimate impact along the defensive line and rushing the passer.
Maxwell played for the DC Defenders and had 23 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks last season while Wells played for the Columbus Aviators and caught 25 passes for 237 yards and with two touchdowns on the year. Notably, Wells also found success as a punt returned and was one of the best in the league at returning kicks.
Whether any of the trio has a chance of actually making the roster remains to be seen, but these are absolutely names to watch during training camp next month.
There are countless examples of guys who have been able to make nice careers in the NFL after taking the alternate route of a different league first before finally getting their shot, and perhaps at least one here could become the latest example.
Banks, Maxwell and Wells all have demonstrated both in college as well as the UFL that they have legitimate game, and when training camp does start next month, they will be real candidates to try to make the roster.
Should they prove the game translates from spring football into the NFL, it would not be a shock to see one or multiple of the trio make the roster. This is the time of year to find diamonds in the rough, and that is exactly what Atlanta is trying to do here.
As the Falcons wrap up their offseason program, some fresh talent is always a good thing to bring into the building.
