FEATURE | Raphaël Le Guen – Brest's academy's crown jewel
Being able to seize an opportunity can sometimes change the course of a life. Or of a career, if we stick strictly to the realm of football. Ask Raphaël Le Guen (20). Promoted to the starting line-up by Éric Roy towards the end of last season, the young Stade Brestois 29 defender has now established himself as an undisputed fixture in the Finistère side's squad.
And whilst the lack of depth in his position and the serious injury suffered by his captain, Brendan Chardonnet (31), undoubtedly facilitated his rise to prominence, his success, meanwhile, Le Guen owes entirely to himself. At the time regarded by Roy as the only player from the academy capable of making the leap to Ligue 1, the Quimper-born player has, through hard work and convincing performances, managed to live up to the expectations placed upon him. And all this in a position for which he was not necessarily originally destined.

Le Guen's transition from attack to defence
Because at the age of 13, when Le Guen joined the Ty Zefs ' academy, the right-footed player was still playing as a centre-forward. But one year was enough for his former coach, Steven Marzin, to perceive his potential as a great – in every sense of the word – defender. Did the fact that his young protégé had grown by about ten centimetres in the space of a few months help? Most certainly. Be that as it may, Le Guen's repositioning at the heart of the defence quickly bore fruit.
The 1.96-metre giant climbed the ranks, took part in the first Youth League campaign in the history of the Brest club and was entrusted with the captain's armband for the reserve team, at just 19 years of age. A meteoric rise for a player who, a few months later, in January 2026, would sign the first professional contract of his career, committing to Les Pirates until 2029. Another sign, if one were needed, of the confidence the Breton entity had placed in Le Guen.
Premier League interest and first serious injury
And whilst he ultimately decided to continue his development in France, things could have turned out very differently for the young Le Guen. Indeed, Crystal Palace showed strong interest over the summer, identifying the defender as the potential successor to Maxence Lacroix (26), himself transferred to Chelsea during the transfer window. So much so that a deal valued at over ten million euros had even been mooted. A considerable sum for a player still finding his feet at the highest level.

But Brest stood firm, managing to resist the lure of a significant cash injection for a club whose overall budget is estimated at around €35m. Le Guen, for his part, although he appeared interested in the idea of joining the Premier League, did not wish to force his departure, aware both of what he owed to Stade Brestois and of the journey he still had to undertake before he could hope to establish himself in the world's top league.
For however promising he may be, the defender naturally still has room for improvement. That said, before he has the chance to work on ironing out these flaws, Le Guen will initially be forced to be patient. Not because of a lack of talent, but due to a serious injury – a fractured fibula – sustained in training at the end of September, which will keep him off the pitch for several months.
A major setback for a youngster who, in the space of a year, has gone from high-potential prospect to a key figure in the dressing room of a Ligue 1 club. But Le Guen has already shown he has what it takes. And there is no doubt he will prove it once again.
