- Fever Trade Proposal Unveils The Missing Link Caitlin Clark Needs To Get Over The Hump

The Indiana Fever have already shown they can win plenty of regular-season games with Caitlin Clark leading the charge . Now comes the harder part: building a viable roster that can survive the postseason and turn that potential into a championship.
One proposed trade could give Indiana a defensive weapon who knows exactly what it takes to win at the highest level.
Bleacher Report floated a deal that would send Washington Mystics veteran Ariel Atkins to Indiana , giving Clark another experienced teammate while addressing one of the Fever's biggest weaknesses.
The proposed trade would send Atkins and the Los Angeles Sparks' 2027 second-round pick, No. 21 overall, to Indiana. Los Angeles would get Monique Billings, Indiana's No. 11 pick in 2027, and a 2028 second-round selection.
Bleacher Report's proposal is just an idea, not a sign that talks are underway. Still, Atkins would address a clear need for Indiana: a proven perimeter defender who could take some of the toughest assignments off Clark's plate.
Indiana won 28 games during the 2026 regular season, establishing itself as a legitimate playoff team. Yet the Fever still have work to do if they want to compete with the league's strongest teams as games get more physical and every defensive possession matters.
That's where Atkins comes in.
The 30-year-old guard has earned five All-Defensive Team selections, including a first-team nod in 2022, and won a WNBA championship with the Washington Mystics in 2019. She brings the kind of defensive experience that Indiana could use alongside Clark, whose offensive creativity makes her the centerpiece of the franchise .
Clark can create shots for herself and her teammates, but Indiana needs players who can make life difficult for opposing guards at the other end. Atkins would give the Fever another perimeter defender capable of taking on difficult assignments, potentially allowing Clark to focus more of her energy on orchestrating the offense.
Atkins' shooting is a bigger question mark. She hit just 28.2% of her threes in 2026 after shooting 36.1% with Chicago the year before. Indiana would be betting that playing alongside Clark gets her back on track. Her passing should give Atkins perimeter looks, but she'll have to make them count.
That isn't guaranteed, of course. A player doesn't automatically become a better shooter just because Clark passes her the ball. But the potential fit is easy to see.
The proposed deal also gives Los Angeles a reason to consider moving Atkins. The Sparks are retooling after trading Kelsey Plum during the season and seeing Nneka Ogwumike retire. Moving Atkins would allow them to climb 10 spots in the 2027 draft, from No. 21 to No. 11, while adding another future second-round pick.
For Indiana, surrendering that first-round selection is a meaningful price. The Fever would be trading a young asset for a veteran who is already 30, and Atkins' recent shooting numbers make the move less than risk-free.
Indiana already has Clark. Now it needs to surround her with players who can hold up defensively in the playoffs. Giving up a first-round pick for a 30-year-old guard is a gamble, but the Fever may be at the point where they need to make one.
There would also be financial considerations. Pincus noted that re-signing Kelsey Mitchell and bringing back Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen could leave Indiana with limited room to maneuver, particularly with Clark potentially eligible for a major renegotiation in 2027 and an extension beginning in 2028.
Thus, the Fever truly can't afford to get this one wrong. They need someone who can defend the league's best guards and cash in on the open looks Clark creates.
Atkins checks several of those boxes.
The Fever would still need to prove they can get past the league's best teams, and one trade wouldn't solve every problem. But if Indiana believes its championship window is opening, adding a veteran defender with a championship pedigree is the kind of calculated gamble worth considering.
