FIFA has clarified what water bottles fans can take into World Cup 2026 stadiums, but the update has not stopped the backlash from supporters.
The governing body now says fans attending matches in the USA and Canada can bring one soft, plastic, 20-ounce, 590ml, factory-sealed disposable water bottle into stadiums.
However, hard-sided reusable bottles remain banned, and that detail has angered many fans who expected clearer access to refillable water inside venues.

The updated guidance means supporters are not facing a complete outside water ban, but the permitted item is narrow. It must be soft, plastic, disposable, sealed and no larger than 20 ounces.
The rule still keeps refillable bottles out of World Cup stadiums, with FIFA pointing to safety and security concerns around hard-sided containers.
That gives fans clarity before the tournament, but it also leaves a practical question. Once the sealed bottle is finished, supporters want to know how convenient and affordable hydration will be inside the ground.
Reaction from supporters has been blunt. Fans on social media have questioned why empty bottles cannot be brought in and refilled, while others criticised the reliance on single-use plastic.
One fan compared the policy to an airline-style add-on culture, while another asked why empty reusable bottles could not simply be filled for free inside stadiums.
The strongest criticism is not about safety itself. It is about whether the policy creates unnecessary cost, waste and inconvenience for fans attending matches in summer conditions.
FIFA has made the rule clearer, but the reaction shows the clarification has not settled the issue. Supporters still want a simple answer on affordable, sustainable access to water once they are inside World Cup stadiums.
