- Finalist for Academic Heisman: Kentucky’s Ty Bryant aces both tests
Against Oklahoma , the ball came down twice into the hands of a man who had read the play before the quarterback finished writing it.
That is the trick of Kentucky football's Ty Bryant. Most defensive backs chase the pass. Bryant seems to have been given the manuscript the night before.

It shouldn't surprise anyone. The Kentucky senior safety has spent five years in a classroom as carefully as he has spent them on a football field, and now the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame have noticed. Bryant is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the award that goes to the sport's top scholar-athlete and is called, with good reason, the Academic Heisman. It asks for three things at once: the grades, the leadership and the football. Most men have to pick two.
Bryant, a Lexington kid playing in the town where he grew up, carries a 3.83 grade-point average. He took his communication degree in May and promptly went back for a second one, in psychology. A man who studies how people talk, and then how they think, and then lines up fifteen yards off the ball to exploit both, is a quarterback's worst weeknight reading.
The résumé runs long. He has been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll every year since the first-year list, and the Dean's List five times. Last year he became the first Wildcat to land on the First-Team Academic All-America roster since Will Levis in 2022, the 23rd Kentucky player ever to earn the honor and the 14th to make the first team. Off the field, he sits on UK's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the SEC's Football Leadership Council, the sort of committee work that never makes a highlight reel and usually decides who a locker room trusts.

But the Campbell is not a trophy for a man who only studies. It wants evidence on Saturdays, and Bryant has stacked it up like cordwood. Forty-four games. 215 tackles. Eight interceptions, tied for fifth among every active player in the FBS. Last year he led the Wildcats with 76 tackles and tied for the SEC lead with four picks, and the league made him Second-Team All-SEC.
This fall he has only gotten louder. Three interceptions, second in the SEC, eighth in the nation. The first came in the win over LSU . Then he produced 10 tackles against Alabama and his first career sack, half of one, which he will no doubt take. He had 10 more in the upset at Texas A&M , double digits against back-to-back ranked opponents. Then came Oklahoma: two interceptions, nine tackles, and a 6-1 record, 4-1 in the SEC, that has Kentucky looking like a team that knows exactly what it is. It was the second time he'd taken two from an SEC offense in one afternoon. The first was against Ole Miss last September.
He is 6-foot and 196 pounds, which is not the build of a man who frightens anyone in a hotel lobby. Frightening is not the point. Football at safety is a game of arrival, of being exactly where the ball will be a half-second before the ball knows it. Bryant gets there early because he has done the reading.
The Wildcats come home Saturday to meet Vanderbilt at 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network, and Bryant will take the field in front of the city that raised him. He may not be handed the Campbell, and the other finalists are not slouches. But there is something fitting about the nomination. In an era when everyone argues over whether the student-athlete is a student at all, here is one with a diploma already framed, a second on the way, and a defensive back's instinct for the ball.

Somewhere on a Saturday night, a quarterback is going to look left, see nothing and throw. It will be a good decision, and it will end badly. The man waiting has a 3.83.
