For the fourth time this season, Nathan Hickey left first base and made his way to the mound. This time, he also earned his first win.
The first baseman threw a scoreless inning of relief Thursday night ahead of a two-run, lead-off home run by Allan Castro as the Worcester Red Sox defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 10-8, in 12 innings at Polar Park.
The 12-inning game was the longest — by inning — in the Worcester Red Sox’ history.
Worcester looked as though it had the back-and-forth game wrapped up as it took a 7-4 lead into the top of the ninth inning. Cade Feeney, however, struggled and ultimately blew the save.
Feeney gave up an RBI triple to Seth Brown before a balk brought in another run. The RailRiders then tied the game on a single to center from Kenedy Corona .
Despite the rough start, Feeney stayed in for two more innings of work.
The RailRiders and the WooSox exchanged runs in the 11th inning, with Kristian Campbell keeping the game alive on a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-8 game.
After starting the 12th with a runner on second, Hickey gave up an infield single to Tsung-Che Cheng . He then got a fly out before forcing Oswaldo Cabrera into a double play to wrap up the inning.
Castro led off the bottom half of the frame with the automatic runner on second. He took a ball, low and inside, from Edinson Duran — another position player who had taken the mound — before hitting an 80 mph pitch over the right field fence.
Worcester moved to five games over .500 with the win.
