The wait is almost over. The first edition of the 2026 College Football Playoff rankings arrives Tuesday night, giving the entire landscape the first real look at how the selection committee views the season that has been anything but predictable.

With three unbeaten Power Four teams, a crowded Big 12 race and several traditional contenders trying to find their way into the final 12 teams, there will be plenty to break down in the coming weeks.
The top of the rankings could look dramatically different from the latest AP Top 25, and a few teams might be in for an unpleasant surprise. There is still a ton of football to be played, but the initial rankings are the start of a road map. They establish the committee's early priorities and offer clues about how it evaluates strength of schedule, quality wins, game control and losses.
Here are five questions that could come up with Tuesday night's reveal.
Miami vs. Georgia at No. 1: Who gets the committee's top vote?
Miami has a compelling argument to open at No. 1. The Hurricanes are unbeaten and have survived two difficult tests against Florida State and North Carolina. But neither victory was particularly convincing, with Miami needing overtime against the Seminoles and a late-game effort to get past the Tar Heels. Yet, winning close games is still winning. The problem is the Hurricanes' resume. It lacks the kind of signature victory many people are looking for.

As for Georgia, they have a stronger argument when it comes to quality wins. Especially on the road against Alabama and at a neutral site against Florida. Those two alone give the Bulldogs a boost as a one-loss team. Those wins should carry considerable weight with the committee.
The Bulldogs also have an opportunity to add considerably with upcoming games against Ole Miss and Missouri.
Miami deserves serious consideration for the top spot, but Georgia has the more impressive body of work. If the committee prioritizes quality wins over an unblemished record, the Bulldogs could open at No. 1. Either way, this debate should become clearer in the coming weeks, particularly when Miami faces Notre Dame this weekend.
Is Utah really worthy of No. 3?
Utah's position in the latest AP Top 25 suggests the Utes could receive considerable respect from the selection committee. At 8-0, Morgan Scalley's team has won 14 consecutive games and established itself as one of the nation's most dangerous teams.

Quarterback Devon Dampier has been key to the Utes' success. He has thrown for 1,876 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 393 rushing yards and five scores this season. His dual-threat ability gives Utah an offensive dimension that few teams can consistently contain.
The Utes also own an impressive victory over Houston, but their resume lacks the depth of some other national contenders.
That makes No. 3 a potentially generous position. Utah has earned its place among the nation's elite through its undefeated record and consistent performances, but the committee may want to see more before placing the Utes ahead of teams with stronger schedules.
The next two weeks will provide those answers. A rivalry showdown against BYU, followed by a difficult matchup against Arizona, could either validate Utah's ranking or expose some weaknesses.

Will Kentucky move ahead of undefeated UCLA at No. 4?
This might be one of the committee's most interesting decisions. Kentucky has won six consecutive games, including an overtime victory over LSU. The Wildcats' ability to handle pressure should be part of the argument to slide them up the rankings.
Their only defeat was a blowout loss to Alabama, which is unlikely to be viewed as a damaging result. UCLA does remain undefeated and Bob Chesney has handled every challenge presented to him in his first year. The Bruins schedule has not included the same caliber opponents faced by other contenders. Once again, there is no way to pick a schedule that only includes top tier teams.
The argument for Kentucky is their resume. On the other hand, UCLA is unbeaten. And until that happens, they deserve to be in the top five. It would be difficult to justify placing Kentucky ahead of an undefeated Power Four team without a compelling reason. However, the committee has historically demonstrated that records alone do not determine rankings.

UCLA also has a challenging stretch ahead, with road games against Minnesota and Michigan and home matchups against Illinois and USC. Kentucky has its own opportunities against Tennessee, Florida and Missouri. If the Wildcats win two or three of those games, their playoff argument becomes considerably stronger.
Is Indiana running out of gas outside the top five?
Indiana's early-season momentum has taken a hit, and the Hoosiers have some legitimate questions to answer.
Their loss to Ohio State is understandable, but consecutive tight victories against Northwestern and Minnesota have raised concerns about whether this team is playing its best football at the right time.

The biggest issue for the defending champs is quarterback Josh Hoover's health. The apparent struggles for the TCU transfer have nearly cost Indiana in each of its last two games. A healthy Hoover makes the Hoosiers a much more dangerous opponent. An unhealthy one could derail their hopes of repeating in the Playoff.
Indiana's position is hardly desperate. ESPN's Football Power Index gives the Hoosiers an 84.6% chance of reaching the 12-team playoff field and a 16% chance of playing in the national championship game. With USC, Washington and Purdue remaining, Indiana has opportunities to regain its confidence.
The Hoosiers should remain in the top 10, but their ranking could reflect a team losing momentum rather than one building toward a championship run.
If BYU beats Utah, do the Cougars crack the top four?
Perhaps no team has more riding on Saturday's 'Holy War' than BYU.

The Cougars appeared to be cruising toward a playoff berth after defeating Notre Dame, but an overtime loss to UCF changed the conversation. Suddenly, BYU has no margin for error. A road victory against undefeated Utah would change everything. It would give the Cougars a signature win, push them ahead towards Big 12 championship aspirations. It could also demonstrate that they belong among the nation's elite.
Could that be enough to move them into the top four? Absolutely. But the committee must also decide how heavily to penalize BYU for its loss to UCF and some less-than-perfect performances against Arizona State and TCU. However, the Cougars have only suffered one loss with Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin out due to injury.
Keep an eye on where BYU lands relative to Notre Dame in Tuesday's rankings. If the Fighting Irish are ahead, it could be a clear indication that the committee is weighing BYU's record. If the Cougars are ahead, the committee is putting head-to-head results and on-field accomplishments ahead of style points.
2026 College Football Playoff Rankings: How to watch
Tuesday night's rankings will provide plenty of talking points, but they won't settle anything. Miami, Georgia, Utah, Kentucky, UCLA, Indiana and BYU all have opportunities to boost their profiles in the final month. However, the committee's first impressions matter. But November football has a way of rewriting the narrative.
The selection committee will reveal its first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
