- Five takeaways from UNC's blowout victory over ETSU in home opener
Saturday was a beautiful day in Chapel Hill...until distant thunderstorms took over in the fourth quarter. Even with an hour-plus weather delay, the North Carolina Tar Heels dominated in their home opener, beating ETSU 35-3.
UNC (2-0) had a scoreless streak spanning back to the first quarter of its season-opening upset of TCU, but Buccaneers (1-2) kicker Ewan Johnson ended that with his 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Still, North Carolina held ETSU under 300 yards and forced a pair of turnovers, anchored by two sacks and TFL apiece from Xavier Lewi s and Jaylen Harvey.

The Tar Heels sport an extremely deep running back room. That proved true during Saturday's victory, with six different backs recording a carry. Benjamin Hall led UNC with 49 rushing yards, but 2025 breakout star Demon June stole the show, scoring three touchdowns on just seven carries.
Billy Edwards quickly proved himself as a major quarterback upgrade for North Carolina in Week Zero, consistently moving the football downfield. On Saturday vs. ETSU, Edwards completed 15 of his 20 passes for 244 yards and a pair of touchdowns, finding 11 different pass-catchers.
Big play tight end Jelani Thurman caught four passes for 71 yards and a first-quarter touchdown, opening the Tar Heel scoring attack. Three minutes into the second quarter, Hall hauled in a 26-yard pass on a wheel route, extending UNC's lead to a pair of touchdowns.
As North Carolina prepares for its September 19 ACC opener at Clemson , let's take a deeper dive into five takeaways for Saturday's blowout win over the Bucs:

The Tar Heels' balanced offense can be a weapon going forward

UNC took full advantage of playing an FCS school on Saturday, overwhelming the ETSU defense through the air and on the ground.
North Carolina totaled 427 yards of offense. Edwards and backup QB Miles O'Neill combined for 266 passing yards, then the Tar Heels' ballcarriers totaled 161 yards.
UNC may not have the opportunity to play deep into its depth chart going forward, as the ACC provides a much higher level of competition. North Carolina showed on Saturday, though, that they can beat you any way offensively.
Defense is the identity of this team

In Week Zero, the Tar Heels held a typically-explosive TCU offense to 10 point and under 300 yards. On Saturday, UNC limited ETSU to a field goal and held it under 300 yards.

Lewis continued his early campaign for ACC Defensive Player of the Year, registering two sacks and TFLs apiece. Harvey, who transferred over from Penn State during the offseason, also recorded two sacks and TFLs apiece.
In the linebacking corps, Richmond transfer Peyton Seelmann tied for a game-high with 10 total tackles. His seven solo takedowns led all players.
North Carolina will be in for a tougher test at Clemson next weekend, but the Tigers have just 32 points through two games. Defense will continue winning the Tar Heels games this fall.
Offensive consistency allowed UNC to play its game

In years' past, the Tar Heel offense has a tendency to start strong and go cold, or fail to start producing until it's too late.

On Saturday vs. ETSU, North Carolina scored in each of the first three quarters. UNC scored its first touchdown in the opening frame, then added 14 points apiece in the second and third quarters.
The Tar Heels don't have to score multiple touchdowns every quarter, but at the very minimum, consistently putting points on the board will continue winning them games.
North Carolina came prepared
It's common to see early-season FBS-FCS matchup, typically providing the FBS squad an easy win and the FCS squad an opportunity to gain exposure and valuable experience.
It's also common to see the FBS teams, like UNC, underestimate their opponents at lower levels of competition. See what happened to the Charlotte 49ers in Week 1, as they lost 43-41 to The Citadel in triple overtime.

The Tar Heels never appeared to play at a slower pace on Saturday, consistently moving the football and rarely allowing big plays from the Buccaneers.
There's a very real chance North Carolina can be an ACC dark horse

Two wins. Two games. Once against a preseason Big 12 contender, the other against an ETSU squad with winning records in each of the past two seasons.
UNC's offense is deep, while defense can lock any team down. The Tar Heels face an extremely tough schedule this fall, continuing with a struggling Clemson squad next weekend, but performances in Weeks 0 and 2 show exactly what this team is capable of.
