Enzo Maresca suffered a defeat on penalties in his opening game as Manchester City manager after the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Inter in 90 minutes of action in Hong Kong.
City's touring squad – without the majority of their World Cup participants from England, Norway, Spain and France– held their own against an Interside for long periods, giving those watching their first tangible evidence of the shape, intensity and patterns Maresca intends to implement at the Etihad Stadium in the months ahead.
Antoine Semenyo was the brightest spark in what was a much more experienced City starting XI that many would have expected for the pre-season opener, with the Ghanian setting up Divin Mubama for the opener on the 15 minute mark after some brilliant individual play on the wing.
Match Report & Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-1 (1-3 Penalties) Inter (Pre-Season Friendly)
Inter levelled just minutes after courtesy of lacklustre defending from Maresca and co, who failed to cope with the wide threat posed by the Serie A side, who were the better team in the first half by some distance.
City improved after the interval as Maresca shuffled his pack and gave several academy stars the chance to impress. Ryan McAidoo came closest to grabbing the winner as he made the most of an 18-minute cameo that drew strong praise from his manager afterwards.
The Blues dominated the second half and hit the crossbar through returning defender Vitor Reis – who spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Girona – but the game went to penalties, where City did not cover themselves in glory and lost 3-1 after successive misses from Rayan Ait-Nouri, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez.
Here are five things learned from Manchester City's pre-season opener against Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
For all the justified context around a touring squad depleted of its biggest international names, the most important thing to take from Saturday's game in Hong Kong was the clarity with which Maresca's footballing identity began to emerge even at this early stage of pre-season.
The pressing triggers, the positional structure in possession and the directness with which City moved the ball forward all pointed toward a manager who arrived in east Asia with specific ideas already embedded in training, rather than using the fixture as a loose introduction to abstract principles.
Maresca has been explicit since taking over from Pep Guardiolathat he intends to install his own footballing identity rather than replicate what came before him – and the first 90 minutes of his tenure offered a glimpse of what that identity looks like in practice.
There is an enormous amount of work still to do and the full picture will only emerge when the World Cup returnees arrive and the starting lineup takes the shape Maresca actually intends it to take. But the foundations are visible, and they are encouraging.
Hugo Viana receives clear Ryan McAidoo future message from Enzo Maresca after five-star Inter cameo
If any individual performance in Hong Kong demanded its own moment of recognition, it was Ryan McAidoo's , whose five-star cameo against Inter prompted Maresca to send what was described as a clear message to director of football Hugo Viana about the teenager's future within the club's plans.
The 18-year-old has been one of the most talked-about young players within the City Football Academy for the best part of two seasons, with his combination of pace, directness and technical quality marking him out as a generational talent in the making. Saturday offered the first indication of what that talent looks like against senior, elite-level opposition – and the answer, apparently, was more than convincing.
Maresca's willingness to use the post-match environment to communicate an internal message about McAidoo's future speaks to the kind of man-management intelligence that defines the best coaches at this level. If the manager is confident enough to use a pre-season friendly as the vehicle to begin that conversation with Viana, it suggests a very clear view of what McAidoo can contribute in 2026-27 already forming in his mind.
Clubs across Europe have been tracking McAidoo for the better part of a year. If Saturday's performance was representative of his current level, City's resolve to keep him at the Etihad Stadium for the coming season looks like very shrewd business indeed.
It would have been easy to dismiss Semenyo's pre-match comments about working on his left foot as a stock pre-season soundbite. What was less easy to dismiss was seeing that work in action against Inter, with the forward demonstrably making decisions with the ball that previous versions of himself would not have made.
The most effective wide players in the modern game are those who are genuinely unpredictable from the defender's perspective, and Semenyo has understood that his natural dominance on his right foot has, over time, made him somewhat readable for those marking him.
The deliberate redistribution of his attacking intent across both feet is not a cosmetic change – it is a meaningful tactical evolution that increases his danger in every one-versus-one.
That this evolution is happening in week one of pre-season, with Maresca having been in the building for barely a fortnight, says something important about the culture the new manager is instilling. Players are thinking, not just doing.
Enzo Maresca reveals outlook on Man City academy stars' futures after impressive Inter showings
Beyond McAidoo, Maresca's post-match comments suggested a broader satisfaction with the performances of several academy-age players who featured in Hong Kong, with the manager speaking about the outlook on multiple young players' futures after their showing against one of Serie A's most accomplished sides.
This matters because it tells us that the pre-season tour is functioning as exactly what Maresca said it would – an extended audition for those on the fringes of his plans, conducted against opposition serious enough to provide meaningful evidence. A player who impresses against Inter in pre-season has earned something that a training ground display cannot replicate.
The depth of positive impressions from within the development group also gives Viana a more complex set of decisions to navigate before the transfer window closes, with several players who might have been expected to depart on loan now making cases for themselves that demand genuine consideration from the manager.
It bears repeating, as clearly as possible, that the squad that took to the field against Inter Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday bore relatively little resemblance to the one that will line up against Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium when the Premier League campaign opens in a fortnight.
Erling Haaland , Rodri , Elliot Anderson , Phil Foden , Marc Guehi and Jeremy Doku were all absent from the squad in Asia. That is, by any reasonable definition, a significant proportion of the most important players in the club's first-team hierarchy – and their eventual return will transform both the shape and the potential of the side Maresca is constructing.
A 1-1 draw against an elite European opponent, followed by a penalty defeat, with a squad this far from its optimal configuration, is entirely in line with what pre-season is supposed to look like. The penalty result changes nothing about the substantive quality of what City showed across 90 minutes.
The more important finding from Saturday is that Maresca looked calm, purposeful and clear-headed throughout his first game in charge – exactly as you would want. As he said himself, City will get better and better . The beginnings of something genuinely exciting are visible in Hong Kong. The real season starts soon.
