According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz , Florida is making a quarterback change for Saturday, and no, that does not automatically make Gainesville easier for Oklahoma .
The Gators are expected to start sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. over Aaron Philo, a move that became pretty predictable after Philo's rough start against Georgia. Two early interceptions opened the door, and Jon Sumrall went to Jones in a hurry. Jones finished that game 18 of 25 for 172 yards with an interception and added a rushing touchdown.

Florida still lost 27-8, but the message was clear enough: the current version of the offense needed a spark, and Sumrall was willing to flip the switch to find one.
Sooner fans would be smart not to shrug this off like Florida just handed the keys to some random backup. Jones is a former four-star from the 2025 class, and he already has one of the louder SEC road wins of the year on his résumé.
When Philo was hurt a few weeks ago, Jones went into Austin and helped Florida knock off Texas 27-24. He threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns in that one and scrambled for 41 yards when drives needed oxygen. That is not a pure game-manager profile. That is a young quarterback who has already shown he can survive a bad environment and still wreck somebody else's Saturday.
The biggest shift is the quarterback run threat. Philo did not force the same kind of discipline on the edges. Jones does. He has 77 rushing yards and a touchdown on the season, which means Oklahoma's defensive ends and linebackers cannot just tee off and climb the field with zero accountability. Contain has to stay clean. The South Carolina tape already showed what happens when a mobile quarterback starts winning on broken plays.

Jones is not LaNorris Sellers , but the principle is the same. If the edges get soft, the whole defensive structure starts leaking.
Florida's offensive line issues make that even more important. The Gators have been leaky in protection and just gave up a strip-sack touchdown against Georgia. Jones' mobility gives him a chance to escape some of that mess, but he has also shown he can get uncomfortable in a hurry. Three interceptions on the year, multiple sacks, and still only his second career start means Oklahoma should get chances if the front seven stays patient instead of reckless.
Sooners head coach Brent Venables has lived off forcing young quarterbacks into bad answers. That formula only works if the first answer is not a free lane outside the tackle.
There is also the health piece. Jones has been dealing with a nagging shoulder issue, and Florida is hoping it does not shrink what he can do. That cuts both ways. Maybe it limits him. Maybe it makes Sumrall even quicker with the hook if the first couple series look shaky.

Either way, Oklahoma has to prepare for both quarterbacks, because if Jones takes a couple clean shots early or turns it over, Philo is not buried so deep that he cannot come back in.
The supporting cast is a little thinner than Florida wanted too. Receiver Vernell Brown III is doubtful with a knee sprain and has been out since late September. He is third on the team in catches and yards, so that is a real piece missing for a young quarterback trying to find rhythm. The production has shifted toward senior Bailey Stockton, who has 20 catches for 234 yards and a touchdown over his last three games, including an eight-catch night against Georgia. Freshman Dallas Wilson still leads the team in receiving yards, but Stockton has been the safer target lately.
All of that circles back to the same defensive assignment Oklahoma already had. Make Jadan Baugh uncomfortable on early downs, keep Jones from creating off-schedule, and force Florida into obvious passing situations. If the Gators are behind the chains and throwing from a muddy pocket with a short-handed receiver room, the Sooners' front seven should get the kind of downs it wants.
The danger is laziness. A "backup quarterback" headline can make people soft-focus on the wrong part of the game. Jones has already beaten Texas on the road. He can run just enough to punish undisciplined rush lanes. And Florida is desperate enough offensively to let him play free early and see what happens.

Oklahoma should still like this matchup if it stays sound. Crowd Baugh, contain Jones, and make the Gators win from the pocket on third and long. Do that, and Gainesville becomes a real opportunity.
Take Jones lightly because his name was not on the depth chart all year, and the Sooners will be playing right into the exact kind of short-week chaos that gets road teams beat.
