It was a disappointing end to a tumultuous season for Philadelphia Flyers forward Owen Tippett , as he missed the entire second-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes with an injury. It was one of the best seasons of Tippett's career in 2025-26, despite dealing with trade rumors when the Flyers' season outlook looked bleak.
Tippett stuck with the team through the trade deadline, then experienced their amazing run to a playoff spot and a first-round series victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins . However, Tippett had just three points in the final month of the regular season and two points in six games in the first round. It was clear that he wasn't at 100%, and then he missed the second round with a sports hernia, according to Bill Meltzer via X, formerly Twitter.
"Thus will be confirmed or denied during exit interviews but heard Tippett is dealing with a sport hernia, York played through rib fracture, Dvorak a separated shoulder," Meltzer reported.
It was clear that the Flyers didn't have much left in the tank in the second-round sweep at the hands of the Hurricanes, and these injuries prove why. York and Dvorak were able to play through their injuries, but Tippett's was obviously too serious to dress.
Sports hernias are a brutal injury to have for hockey players, as all their power and explosiveness come from that area of their body. One of Tippett's strengths is his speed and physicality, and if that was limited, the team felt that he'd be better off in the press box.
