The NHL offseason is in full swing, and the Philadelphia Flyers are attempting to make arguably the biggest move of the summer. Philly announced on Friday that the front office officially signed Leo Carlsson to an offer sheet that would give him the NHL's highest AAV.
The Flyers announced the decision on X, formerly known as Twitter. Carlsson, who is just 21 years old, has signed a five-year deal with an AAV of $18 million . However, the Ducks could match the offer sheet, but if not, then Philly would be required to give up four future first-round picks.
"We have tendered an offer sheet to Anaheim center Leo Carlsson ," a Flyers statement reads. "The offer is a five-year contract worth an average annual value (AAV) of $18M, which would require four of the Flyers' first-round draft picks in each of the next four seasons as compensation."
Reports indicate that the deal is front-loaded , meaning the Swedish native would be making most of his money in the first few years of the contract, according to Chris Johnson of The Athletic. It's said that the Ducks have seven days to either match the offer or let Carlsson sign with the Flyers.
"BIG NEWS: Leo Carlsson signs an offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers carrying an $18M AAV on a five-year deal. Word is the contract is heavily front-loaded," reported Johnston. "Anaheim has seven days to match, or they'll receive four first-round picks as compensation."
The next seven days will determine which team the three-year veteran will play for next season and beyond. Considering Carlsson's age and potential, Anaheim may prefer keeping him on its roster instead of acquiring draft compensation. But four first-round picks would be enticing for any franchise in any sport.
Leo Carlsson is coming off a career year with the Ducks, helping lead the franchise to its f irst playoff appearance since the 2017-18 campaign . In 70 games played last season, Carlsson recorded 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists), which is the second most points for the team, only behind Cutter Gauthier (69 points).
