Rex Ryan thinks Bill Belichick belongs in Buffalo.
Less than an hour after reports surfaced that the Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott after yet another season ended without a Super Bowl title, Ryan said on ESPN's "Get Up" that the former New England Patriots coach was the only option.
"Get the guy that has proven he can go to a Super Bowl — and by the way, win what? Six with Tom Brady ," Ryan said. "That's the only guy, in my opinion, you replace Sean McDermott with."
Ryan coached against Belichick in the AFC East from 2009 to 2014 while with the New York Jets and from 2015-2016 during his brief tenure with the Bills .
Belichick just finished his first season coaching college football at North Carolina. The team went just 4-8 this fall, but Ryan said Monday that had nothing to do with Belichick's abilities in the NFL.
"If anyone thinks Bill Belichick has lost it, you have lost it," Ryan said. "No, he hasn't. He's just not meant for college football, alright? He's on a way different level than those kids in college, alright? Trust me. I'm telling you, I feel it in my bones that Belichick is the guy."
Belichick coached 24 seasons in New England , going 266-121 while winning six Super Bowls with Tom Brady .
Ryan was 3-9 against the Patriots during his time with the Jets and 1-3 with the Bills.
"You've got the chance to hire the greatest head coach in the history of our sport," Ryan said. "That's my guy ... or me again, what the hell."
