If you take out all the funky plays and narrow pass-rushers down to their truest form, you're left with straight dropbacks. No play-action, no roll outs. Just my man vs. your man. One-on-one football: win your battle, change the play.
And if you look at how often defensive linemen pressure the quarterback on these pure dropbacks, you get a leaderboard that reads as follows:

Jonathan Allen, 25.0%
Darius Robinson, 21.4%
Yes, that's Darius Robinson near the very top of a key pass-rushing leaderboard. To those who followed the first two seasons of Robinson's career — after theCardinalsselected him No. 27 overall in 2024 — this is a shocking change.
In 2024 and 2025, Robinson ranked dead last in that same stat, among linemen with as many opportunities as he had. His pressure rate on true dropbacks: 3.5%.
That's just one way to tell the story.
Robinson's pressure rate on all plays has gone from 3.6% (123rd of 127 qualifying defensive linemen) to 13.8% (11th), per Sumer Sports. His pass-rush win rate has gone from 2.2% (124th) to 13.8% (21st). You get the idea.

"I didn't like what I saw the first two years, how I played," Robinson said.
So this season, he's adopted a new mindset: "I ain't got nothing to lose. Just ball. Have fun. See the ball, get the ball."
That sounds like a cliché, but it's real.

Early on, Robinson wanted to be perfect. He would go into each snap with an exact plan of attack, and he was committed to following that plan to a T. Now, his mind is less cluttered. He might have an idea of how he wants to attack an offensive lineman, but when the ball is snapped, he lets his instincts take over.
"You learn things on the grass," defensive lineman Roy Lopez said. "You learn how to just play faster and anticipate. So he's learned to anticipate. He's learned to play fast."

It's a mindset, Robinson said, that he learned from Calais Campbell last season, at the depths of his struggles.
"The big thing he told me is things will just happen when you're playing hard and you're not thinking about stuff," Robinson said.
Part of Robinson's increased productivity can also be traced to taking more shots. Sometimes, to make an impact play, a defensive lineman has to be willing to take an ugly loss.
"We call them hitch or pitch moments," defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said. "You've gotta know, based on what the call is and what's presented from the offense, here's an opportunity for me to go make a play."

Now, there are tradeoffs here, too.
Sumer Sports tracks something called negative play rate — how often a player loses a rep particularly badly. Against the run, Robinson has a 13.8% negative play rate. That's dead last at his position, up from 8.3% over his first two seasons.
That shows up on tape, as well. Too often, Robinson gets moved off the ball with ease by opposing linemen, opening a hole to the gap he's tasked with defending. When he's on the field, the Cardinals defense has been more effective against the pass, but less effective against the run.
Plus, Robinson's role is smaller than in years past. Over his first two seasons, he hovered around a 50% snap share when healthy. This year, he's at just 34.9%. That's the lowest rate among the Cardinals' five primary defensive linemen, as Rallis carefully picks his spots to use Robinson.

Put it all together and it's not as if Robinson is suddenly a Pro Bowler just because he's improved as a pass rusher. It still seems unlikely that the Cardinals would pick up his fifth-year option this offseason, estimated at $14.2 million for 2028.
But across his first two seasons, Robinson provided almost no value. Last year, Pro Football Focus graded him as the single worst defensive lineman in the NFL. This year, he's in the middle of the pack, as a rotational piece who can make some eye-popping plays in the passing game, swimming past offensive guards and ripping off blocks.
Even with the tradeoffs, that's a marked improvement from the start of his career. Just 11 months ago, Robinson stood at his locker after one loss and said, "I'm not who I thought I was." That was difficult for not just Robinson, but for his teammates to see.
"He's been a through a lot, man," Lopez said. "He's been through a lot. But he's got such a great head on his shoulders. He brings so much love and laughter to so many people."

Now, Robinson is able to offer a different tone.
"I know who I am," Robinson said. "And slowly, I can feel it cooking."
