The Toronto Blue Jays season ended in disappointment, yet one of their former catchers is now playing for their biggest rival in the playoffs. Ali Sánchez, who wore number 20 for Toronto, is currently on the New York Yankees' active roster for the American League Division Series. This switch happened just as the Jays were officially knocked out of contention. "One year after coming within 90 feet of winning the World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays' season is over. They are officially eliminated from postseason play," Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today. It is a stark contrast to see a former member of that group helping the Yankees chase a title just days later.
A Rapid Roster Shift
Sánchez did not start the season with the Bronx Bombers. He spent time with Toronto and even Boston before finding his way to New York. The Yankees signed him to a Major League contract right before a game on June 6, according to the New York Yankees official release. "Prior to tonight's game, the Yankees signed C Ali Sánchez (#39) to a Major League contract and," the team stated in their announcement. He quickly earned a spot on the 26-man roster for the ALDS. The team posted on social media, "Our 26 for the ALDS. #RepBX | #Postseason." This move shows how quickly a player can go from being a bench option to a playoff contributor.

Sánchez brings a specific skill set that fits the Yankees' current needs. His 51-game 2026 regular season ended with a .244 batting average, 21 hits, one home run, eight RBIs, and seven runs. While the numbers are modest, his presence adds depth behind the plate. The switch from wearing number 20 in Toronto to number 39 in New York marks a complete change of scenery.
Why He Fits Now
Teams often look for players who have seen the league from different angles. Sánchez has played for multiple organizations, including the Blue Jays and Red Sox, before landing in the Bronx. "The athletic 29-year-old is no stranger to a baffling blunder, but he's also extremely talented and younger than most free agents," a former scout noted about his profile. This mix of youth and experience makes him a valuable asset during a long playoff run. He was previously signed to a minor league deal by Toronto before moving on to other teams.
The timing of his arrival could not be better for the Yankees. With the postseason underway, having a fresh catcher who knows the league well is a huge boost. The team needs every hand they can get to navigate the tough competition ahead. Sánchez's journey from a minor league signing to a playoff roster spot is a testament to his persistence. He had to clear waivers and sign multiple contracts to get here, but he made it work. "Boston Red Sox claimed C Ali Sánchez off waivers from Toronto Blue Jays," which was a key step in his path to New York.

Now he faces the team he left behind in spirit, if not in uniform. The Yankees hope his fresh legs and sharp mind will help them secure a win. As the series moves forward, every play behind the plate matters. Sánchez has a chance to make his mark on the biggest stage. The goal is simple: help the team win. "be in a similar area of support" was a phrase used regarding his role, suggesting he provides stability where needed. The Yankees are looking for that exact kind of steady hand as they push for the next round.
