Kristaps Porzingis is set to enter free agency this summer, but his future is unclear after a disappointing season. After starting the year with the Hawks , Porzingis was dealt to the Warriors at the trade deadline in hopes he could give Golden State a boost.
But Porzingis, like he’s endured throughout his career, struggled to stay on the court between injury and illnesses. The former Celtics big man gave an obscure forecast to the California Post’s Melissa Rohlin when it comes to free agency, saying he’s going to look at all his options.
“I haven’t had a good year,” Porzingis told Rohlin. “If I had a good year, I think I’d have a more clear picture of what I want to do. Because I’ve had an up-and-down year like this, this is an offseason in my career that I think I’m just going to take a step back, look at the whole picture and then see what’s the best direction for me.”
Porzingis played in 32 total games (23 starts) with the Hawks and Warriors, averaging 16.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He at least finished the season strong in the play-in tournament for Golden State, putting up 20 points in the win over the Clippers then 11 in the season-ending loss to the Suns.
But it was a frustrating season for Porzingis, whose illness issues date back to his time with the Celtics. A lot has been made about his illness that sapped his strength during the East semifinals against the Knicks last playoffs.
Now Porzingis enters free agency where his market will be unclear. Whichever team signs him will know about the availability issues. But when he is on the court, Porzingis is a force on both ends of the court as a floor-spacing big man.
Porzingis spent two seasons in Boston from 2023-25, winning the 2024 NBA title. He quickly became a fan favorite and enjoyed his moments with the TD Garden crowd. But health was an issue in Boston, as well, with Porzingis unable to stay on the court consistently.
