Although some players will remain in the NFL into their 30s and, on select occasions, their 40s, others feel compelled to call it quits in their 20s for various reasons.
A former Dallas Cowboys , Philadelphia Eagles , and New York Giants wide receiver/Super Bowl champion did just that on Wednesday afternoon, retiring from the big leagues at age 28 after a $10.6 million career.
"The Cowboys placed veteran WR Parris Campbell on the reserve/retired list today," NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on X/Twitter. "The ( Indianapolis ) Colts ' 2019 second-round pick calls it a career."
After a standout collegiate career at Ohio State, the Colts selected Campbell with the No. 59 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Injuries limited Campbell to 15 games in his first three seasons with the Colts, but he was fully healthy during the 2022-23 campaign.
Unsurprisingly, the Akron, Ohio native enjoyed his most productive season in Indianapolis, finishing with 63 receptions for 623 yards and three touchdowns in 17 outings.
As a free agent in 2023, Campbell signed a one-year deal with the Giants, but was far from a difference maker for the then Daniel Jones-led NFC East offense. The National champion wideout totaled 12 receptions for 104 yards in 12 contests, which wasn't impressive enough to earn him a new deal with New York.
Campbell secured a deal with the Eagles ahead of the 2024-25 season, and though he only caught six passes for 30 yards and one touchdown in five contests, he ended the year as a Super Bowl champion.
The former first-team All-Big Ten WR ended his career with the Cowboys, spending most of this past season on Dallas' practice squad before retiring.
Although Campbell likely hoped to have a more illustrious NFL career, he should take solace in the fact that he stuck around for a little over half a decade and won a Super Bowl in the most competitive football league in existence.
