Former Giants outfielder Jerar Encarnación signs with Japan's Yokohama BayStars originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
A very recent former Giants slugger is on the move.
Outfielder Jerar Encarnación, who San Francisco designated for assignment on May 4 , signed a contract with the Yokohama BayStars in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, the team announced Thursday.
The 28-year-old Encarnación originally made the Giants' 26-man Opening Day roster to begin the 2026 MLB season, but struggled mightily over the first month-plus, batting .176/.200/.206 with six hits in 35 plate appearances.
San Francisco opted to go with Encarnación over young outfielder Luis Matos on its initial roster, which led the Giants to designate Matos, who was out of options, for assignment and later trading him to the Milwaukee Brewers before the start of the season.
Matos since has been designated for assignment by Milwaukee and currently is on its Triple-A roster.
And Encarnación is out of the league altogether.
