Before joining May's staff, Williamson spent eight seasons at Virginia State after being hired as the Trojans' associate head men's basketball coach in 2013. During his tenure, the program established itself as one of the CIAA's premier teams.
Williamson helped guide Virginia State to six consecutive CIAA Northern Division championships, two CIAA tournament titles and four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances while the Trojans averaged 21 victories per season.
The 2018-19 campaign marked one of the most successful seasons in program history. Virginia State finished with a school-record 28 wins after breaking the previous program record of 25 victories the year before. The Trojans also captured the CIAA regular-season and tournament championships while putting together winning streaks of 16 and 10 games during the season.
May brought Williamson with him to Florida Atlantic before the 2021-22 season, ending Williamson's successful run at Virginia State. Their partnership quickly paid dividends as the Owls reached the 2023 NCAA Final Four, one of the biggest Cinderella runs in recent tournament history.
When May accepted the Michigan job in 2024, Williamson again joined his staff in Ann Arbor. The duo helped engineer a remarkable turnaround during their first season, leading the Wolverines from an eight-win campaign the previous year to a 27-10 record and a Big Ten Tournament championship.
Michigan took another leap during the 2025-26 season. Williamson helped May guide the Wolverines to a program-record 37 wins, the outright Big Ten regular-season championship and the NCAA national championship after defeating UConn in the title game.
Now the duo will once again reunite in Dallas as they look to turn the Mavericks into a contender a round reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.
