Former LSU football QB Michael Van Buren will get another chance to be a starting quarterback in 2026. Per a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, South Florida named Van Buren QB1.
Van Buren began his career at Mississippi State in 2024 before spending 2025 at LSU. He's now at his third school in three years. Van Buren took over as LSU's starter in 2025 as Garrett Nussmeier struggled with an injury and was eventually shut down. Van Buren stepped in and threw for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns, only throwing two picks.
LSU's offense struggled to find an explosive element, with Van Buren tossing the ball as the QB and averaging just 6.7 yards per attempt.
With Mississippi State in 2024, Van Buren completed 54.7% of his passes for 1,885 yards and 11 touchdowns. LSU signed Van Buren hoping he could eventually be Nussmeier's successor. But when Brian Kelly was fired and the roster was flipped, that plan went out the window.
Now, Van Buren gets another chance, this time at the Group of Six level. USF is led by first-year head coach Brian Hartline, who will try to sustain the momentum Alex Golesh built in Tampa.
