A surprisingly heartwarming story from Halloween weekend for the LSU Tigers : former No. 7 recipient and star wide receiver Kayshon Boutte had his No. 1 jersey retired back home at Westgate High School in New Iberia on Friday night, per Tory Trahan .
Boutte has had a lot of ups and downs throughout his journey in football, but he came out on top, so it's great to see him receive this honor. Unsurprisingly, Boutte was a star in high school in both football and track and field. As a senior, he caught 12 touchdown passes and ran for 15 more. He came to the Tigers in 2020 as the top receiver in the state and the next in line after the elite group of Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Terrace Marshall Jr.
Those are sky-high expectations, and he looked on that path for a while. In the final game of his freshman campaign he had 14 catches for 308 yards and three touchdowns against the Ole Miss Rebels. He had flashes after that, but injuries and off-the-field issues ended up keeping his Tigers career from reaching that next level.
Those issues ended up with Boutte falling to the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft, where he joined the New England Patriots . He became a solid option for Drake Maye during the 2025 Patriots Super Bowl run , but was traded to the Houston Texans ahead of the 2026 campaign in exchange for a defensive back and a seventh-round pick.
Now in his fourth year, Boutte has amassed 93 catches for 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns. Getting to the NFL was never a guarantee after his college career, so it was good to see him mature and grow into someone who can fill a role and still has plenty of potential at 24 years old.
Back in January of this year, Boutte opened up about gambling issues from his time in Baton Rouge. His Player's Tribune piece is certainly worth a read for any Tigers fan.
This was surely a very rewarding night for the wide receiver who is now a father and continuing to fight for his spot in the league.
The Texans are on their bye week, which is why they were able to make it happen. He has 15 catches for 194 yards. There is a lot of competition in that room and the offense has struggled as a whole. He is a free agent after this season, but it shouldn't be the end of his football career.
