Former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko has accused football officials of rigging games following the controversial finish to Notre Dame's 28-24 loss to BYU. His comments followed a disputed final play that also prompted the Big 12 Conference to acknowledge an officiating error that denied Notre Dame another opportunity to score.
The controversy erupted Saturday night when Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr threw an incomplete pass toward Jaden Greathouse in the end zone. Although the game clock appeared to have 1 second remaining, officials ended the game, leaving Notre Dame without another chance to attempt a game-winning touchdown.
Fehoko's comments went beyond criticizing a missed call. The former NFL player claimed that officials had manipulated games during his professional career and alleged that the league threatened his pension after he previously spoke out. However, he did not provide publicly verified evidence supporting those accusations.
Fehoko took to social media following Notre Dame's controversial defeat to express his frustration with football officiating. He claimed that players during his NFL career knew officials were rigging games and suggested that similar conduct occurred in college football.
The former defensive tackle also alleged that the NFL threatened to take away his pension after he criticized the league the previous year. His statement intensified the discussion surrounding the Notre Dame-BYU finish, although he did not identify specific games, officials or league employees to substantiate his claims.
Fehoko's allegations remain unverified and should not be confused with the confirmed officiating error acknowledged by the Big 12. While his comments reflect his personal position, the available evidence does not establish that officials deliberately manipulated the outcome of either professional or college football games.
Notre Dame entered its matchup against BYU as the No. 2 team in the country, while the Cougars held the No. 8 ranking. BYU ultimately secured a 28-24 victory in Provo, Utah, but the closing moments quickly became the main talking point.
With Notre Dame seeking a late touchdown, Carr launched a pass toward Greathouse in the end zone. BYU defensive back Evan Johnson contested the play, and replays prompted debate over whether the defender committed defensive pass interference by interfering with Greathouse's opportunity to catch the ball.
Officials did not throw a flag, and the incomplete pass initially appeared to end the game. However, another problem soon became apparent: footage showed that 1 second remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground, meaning Notre Dame should have had another opportunity to run a play.
The Big 12 Conference reviewed the final sequence and acknowledged that the game clock should have retained 1 second after Carr's incomplete pass. The conference also admitted that the replay officiating crew incorrectly cleared the play, allowing the game to end prematurely.
That acknowledgment confirmed a significant procedural mistake, rather than proving the deliberate manipulation alleged by Fehoko. The conference said it would conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating procedures before the following week's games.
The distinction matters because an admitted officiating error does not establish intentional wrongdoing. Officials can make consequential mistakes under pressure, and the Big 12's statement addressed what went wrong without providing evidence that the crew intentionally favored BYU or attempted to disadvantage Notre Dame.

The clock error was not the only disputed decision. Notre Dame supporters also questioned the absence of a defensive pass interference penalty on the final pass, arguing that the contact between Johnson and Greathouse warranted a flag.
Pass interference decisions can depend on the nature, timing and location of contact, making individual plays subject to debate. Nevertheless, the sequence became particularly frustrating for Notre Dame because a potential penalty and the clock issue both involved the final opportunity to extend the game.
Even if officials had called pass interference, the penalty would not automatically have guaranteed a Notre Dame victory. The Fighting Irish would still have needed to execute another play and score. The acknowledged clock mistake, however, meant they were denied the chance to attempt that final play.
Fehoko's comments attracted attention because he presented the controversy as part of a broader problem with football officiating. Rather than limiting his criticism to the decisions in Provo, he claimed that players were aware of games being manipulated during his time in the NFL.
He also alleged that the league threatened his pension after his previous criticism. However, his public comments did not identify the people allegedly responsible, explain the circumstances of the purported threat in detail or provide documents confirming that it occurred.
These limitations are important when assessing the credibility of serious accusations. Fehoko's experience as a former NFL player gives him a personal perspective on professional football, but that background alone does not verify claims of coordinated misconduct by officials or league executives.
Accusations of biased officiating frequently surface after controversial finishes, particularly when a disputed decision affects a prominent team or a closely contested game. However, claims that officials intentionally determine outcomes require substantially stronger evidence than footage showing a missed call or procedural error.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell rejected claims of league-wide officiating manipulation in February 2025, describing the theory that officials favored the Kansas City Chiefs as ridiculous. The NFL Referees Association also rejected allegations that officials were colluding to influence games.
Those responses do not establish that every officiating decision is correct. Instead, they illustrate the difference between acknowledging human error and alleging intentional misconduct. Fehoko's claims would require independent corroboration before they could reasonably be treated as evidence of systematic game-rigging.

The Big 12's admission gives Notre Dame supporters a clear basis for questioning the administration of the game's final seconds. When a conference acknowledges that officials ended a contest with time remaining, it raises legitimate questions about replay procedures, communication and accountability.
The conference's promised review offers an opportunity to examine how replay officials handled the final sequence and why the remaining second was not restored. Clearer procedures could help prevent similar mistakes, particularly when a game's outcome depends on a final play.
However, the review should not be treated as confirmation of Fehoko's broader allegations. Establishing deliberate manipulation would require evidence of intent, not simply proof that an official or replay crew made an incorrect decision. The available information supports criticism of the clock management, but not a conclusion that the game was rigged.
Notre Dame's loss to BYU will remain a reminder of how a single officiating decision can overshadow a major college football matchup. The Fighting Irish were denied another play after the Big 12 acknowledged that time remained, while the disputed pass interference call added another layer to the debate.
For Fehoko, the controversy provided a platform to repeat serious allegations about football officials. Yet his statements remain personal claims, and neither the Big 12's admission nor the disputed final play independently establishes that professional or college games are being deliberately manipulated.
The next meaningful development will be whether the Big 12's review leads to procedural changes and greater transparency. Until evidence supports a broader conclusion, the distinction between a confirmed officiating mistake and an unproven allegation of rigging remains central to understanding the controversy.
Fun fact:Notre Dame is an independent football program rather than a member of a conference for football competition. As a result, the conference affiliated with its opponent generally supplies the officiating crew. The Big 12 therefore handled officiating for the Notre Dame-BYU matchup.
