- Former Northwestern Cornerback Lands $46 Million Extension With Giants
Former Northwestern standout Greg Newsome II is getting rewarded for his strong start with the New York Giants , agreeing to a three-year, $46 million contract extension that includes $32 million guaranteed.
The deal represents a significant payday for the veteran cornerback, who joined New York on a one-year contract during free agency earlier this year. Rather than testing the market again after the season, Newsome has secured his future with the Giants through a new agreement that could keep him in New York through 2029.

For Newsome, the extension is an important accomplishment after taking a chance on himself with a short-term deal. He arrived in New York looking to establish himself with a new organization and earn a longer-term opportunity.
Through the first six games of the 2026 season, he has done exactly that, recording 25 tackles, one interception and six passes defended.
His performance has helped stabilize the Giants' secondary and demonstrated the value he can bring as a starting cornerback. The new contract is a significant commitment from New York and a rewarding development for a player who has worked to establish himself as one of the team's important defensive pieces.
Newsome originally entered the NFL as the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected by the Cleveland Browns after three seasons at Northwestern.

He spent the first four-plus seasons of his professional career in Cleveland before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2025 season. He finished that year in Jacksonville before signing his one-year contract with the Giants in March 2026.
Throughout his NFL career, Newsome has appeared in 77 games, recording 214 tackles, five interceptions and 49 passes defended. His best season came in 2023 with Cleveland, when he registered two interceptions and 14 passes defended in 14 appearances. He also earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America's All-Rookie Team after his first NFL season in 2021.
Before becoming a first-round NFL draft pick, Newsome established himself as one of the top defensive backs in the Big Ten during his time in Evanston. He played three seasons for the Wildcats from 2018-20, appearing in 21 games and totaling 71 tackles, 24 passes defended, one interception and one fumble recovery.
His final season was particularly impressive. Despite playing in just six games during the shortened 2020 campaign, Newsome recorded nine pass breakups, which led the Big Ten. He earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition from both the conference's coaches and the media, along with third-team All-America honors from the Associated Press.

Newsome's success is another example of Northwestern talent making an impact at the professional level. From developing into an All-Big Ten cornerback in Evanston to becoming a first-round selection and now securing a major NFL extension, he has continued to build an impressive career.

The extension is also a reminder of the opportunities that can come from betting on yourself. Newsome entered the offseason with a one-year deal and the goal of proving he deserved a long-term home. Several months later, he has earned a three-year commitment from the Giants.
For Northwestern fans, it is exciting to see a former Wildcat receive that recognition and secure a major payday. Newsome will now look to continue his strong play in New York and show that his early-season success is only the beginning of his next chapter in the NFL.
