STILLWATER, Okla. — Former Oklahoma State baseball standout Nolan McLean has added another milestone to his young Major League Baseball career, becoming the first rookie pitcher in MLB history to win a Gold Glove Award.
The New York Mets right-hander earned the National League honor following an impressive 2026 season, making history for both himself and his organization.
McLean became the first Mets player to receive a Gold Glove since outfielder Juan Lagares in 2014 and just the second pitcher in franchise history to earn the award, joining Ron Darling, who won in 1989.
McLean's defensive versatility pays off
Before establishing himself as a major league pitcher, McLean showcased his athleticism in multiple roles at Oklahoma State. The former Cowboy was a two-way player during his college career, spending time at six different defensive positions while also contributing on the mound.
That versatility has carried over to the professional level, where McLean has developed into one of baseball's most effective defensive pitchers. During the 2026 season, McLean recorded four Defensive Runs Saved, tied for fourth among major league pitchers. He also registered three pickoffs while allowing just six stolen bases. Opposing runners attempted only eight steals against him throughout the season, reflecting his ability to control the running game.
McLean finished with 16 putouts and 24 assists, further demonstrating his defensive reliability. His Gold Glove recognition marks the first time a rookie pitcher has earned the award since its introduction in 1957.
Strong rookie season extends beyond defense
McLean's accomplishments weren't limited to his work in the field. The former Oklahoma State standout finished the season with a 12–10 record and a 3.16 ERA across 31 starts for New York.
He recorded 194 strikeouts in 179⅔ innings while posting a 1.17 WHIP, establishing himself as a key member of the Mets' starting rotation. Those numbers have also placed McLean in the conversation for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.
The winner is scheduled to be announced November 9, giving McLean an opportunity to add another major individual honor to his first full season in the majors.
Another former Cowboy earns recognition
McLean wasn't the only Oklahoma State product receiving consideration for defensive honors. Mets outfielder Carson Benge, another former Cowboy, was named a National League Gold Glove finalist in right field.
Benge recorded 259 putouts and 10 outfield assists during the season, demonstrating the defensive ability that helped him earn recognition among the league's top players at his position. Although Benge did not win the award, his selection as a finalist alongside McLean highlights the continued impact of former Oklahoma State players at the major league level.
For McLean, the historic Gold Glove adds another accomplishment to an already impressive professional résumé. And with Rookie of the Year honors still to be announced, the former Cowboy could have another reason to celebrate before the offseason concludes.
