Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert, who played for the Green Bay Packers, is demanding an officiating crew be investigated and suspended on Sunday night.
The Lions topped the Packers on Sunday evening, in a close game. There were several controversial calls, including some brutal roughing the passer penalties, that went against the Packers.
Benkert spoke out on social media, demanding an investigation and suspension.
"This crew in the Packers Lions game needs to be investigated and suspended after this game," he shared on X.
"How does a ref throw a phantom intentional grounding 20 seconds after the play when the ball lands 5 yards from the intended target?"
NFL fans were completely fed up, too.
"Insane world we live in where this is considered roughing the passer on the Packers…," Rate the Refs shared on X.
Tom Brady was furious with the NFL's officiating crew, too
The NFL on FOX announcer publicly blasted the refs during the broadcast on Sunday afternoon, too.
"No, my goodness. What is that?! There's no way!… That's definitely not roughing the passer!" Brady said.
FOX analyst Dean Blandino agreed, too.
"That's teach-tape tackle. That's not roughing the passer."
Pat McAfee of ESPN appreciates the calling out, too.
"I really appreciate Tom Brady's disdain for some of these Roughing The Passer calls He's an owner and one of the lead commentators.. he's got A LOT OF WEIGHT," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
It'll be interesting to see if the NFL does anything about these questionable penalty calls, as the league has been hammered by penalty call after penalty call, especially in big moments, in several big games this season.
It's a growing problem and, clearly, it's one that much of the sports world agrees needs to be looked into.
