You can never have enough pitching depth throughout a Major League Baseball season.
That statement is especially true during spring training, when there are dozens of arms in camp that over half the fanbase has never heard of before. Tayron Guerrero may be one of those unknown pitchers for followers of the Boston Red Sox .
Guerrero, 35, is a Colombian native with 106 innings of MLB experience , spent mostly with the Miami Marlins from 2018-19. The 6-foot-8 right-hander made his big league debut in 2016 with the San Diego Padres .
As a non-roster invitee, Guerrero will try to impress enough so that the AL East club considers retaining him as a depth option in this year's bullpen.
A power fastball could help Guerrero return to Majors
Since his last outing with the Marlins in 2019, Guerrero has pitched all over the world, including stints in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He posted a 6.41 ERA in 19.2 innings last season with Nippon Professional Baseball's Chiba Lotte Marines.
A fastball that averages nearly 100 mph could lead the Red Sox to keep him in the organization to start the year.
"His elite extension, thanks to his massive frame, makes his 98 mph average fastball appear even faster...He topped out at 100.6 mph this spring and, if he maintains form, could be a strong arm in Triple-A Worcester whom the Red Sox call up at some point this season," The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey wrote about Guerrero last Friday.
Nobody's saying Guerrero will have a spot in the bullpen for all 162 games, but it wouldn't hurt manager Alex Cora to throw him out there in low-leverage situations.
