Yan Diomande is making an increasingly strong case for a regular place in Real Madrid's attack, with his latest performance against Racing Santander adding to the competition for starting positions under Jose Mourinho.
The Ivorian scored a spectacular goal in the 3-0 victory at El Sardinero, continuing a remarkable run that has also attracted attention from former Real Madrid manager and player, Jorge Valdano.
Diomande's emergence has coincided with Real Madrid's improved results following their victory over Barcelona in El Clasico.
At the same time, however, his growing influence also raises questions about Vinicius Jr.'s position in the attacking lineup.
The 19-year-old has been particularly productive since returning from international duty, registering four goals and four assists across his last six appearances.

Against Racing, his spectacular finish from the edge of the penalty area capped an impressive individual display and further strengthened his case for continued involvement.
As such, Valdano has also noticed the transformation. While speaking on Movistar (h/t MARCA ), the Argentine highlighted how the youngster has grown into his role after appearing less assured during his initial appearances.
"He's been gaining confidence; he looked a bit shy in the first few matches,"he began saying.
While Diomande's development is encouraging for Real Madrid, Valdano believes it could create an uncomfortable situation for Vinicius.
The Brazilian has traditionally occupied an important position in Real Madrid's attack, but in his absence, the performances of his teammates are increasing competition for places.
"These matches are bad news for Vinicius, who will have to reclaim the place that his teammates have now taken from him,"said Valdano.

Notably, Vinicius is expected to start against AEK Athens in Wednesday's Champions League fixture.
However, he will subsequently serve the final match of his domestic suspension against Valencia before becoming available again in La Liga after the international break, when Real Madrid face Celta.
Mourinho has remained careful when discussing the Brazilian's position. Ahead of the Racing match, the Portuguese coach made his appreciation for Vinicius clear without guaranteeing him a starting place.
"I care a lot about Vinicius, I need him, but I'm not saying he'll start,"said Mourinho.
That statement alone shows the competition developing within Real Madrid's attack.
Diomande's performances have given Mourinho a strong and compelling option, while Vinicius will need to respond when opportunities arise.
This is the state of Real Madrid's attack. Diomande has grabbed the opportunity presented to him, which will force Vinicius to earn his place back as he will no longer enjoy the unassailable spot he once owned.
