Former Red Sox infielder Justin Turner isn’t ready to call it quits despite not getting an opportunity with an MLB team for his age-41 season.
Turner announced Saturday (on Instagram ) that he has signed with the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican Baseball League after his latest foray into free agency didn’t result in a deal with an affiliated club.
“I am fired up to join the team and to bring another championship back down to Cerro Colorado. I also wanted you guys not to worry, the beard is definitely on the way back.”
Turner spent last season with the Cubs and appeared in 80 games, hitting .219 with three homers, 18 RBIs and a .602 OPS while playing both corner infield spots and serving as the designated hitter . The two-time All-Star has played for four teams in the last three years after finishing a nine-year run with his hometown Dodgers .
Turner had a productive year with the Red Sox in 2023, serving as that team’s clubhouse leader while hitting .276 with 23 homers, 96 RBIs and an .800 OPS at 38 years old. After the season, he signed a one-year deal with Toronto but was traded to the Mariners at the deadline. After two months in Seattle , he signed with Chicago last winter.
Turner has appeared in 1,758 regular season major league games over 17 seasons since debuting in 2009 and won the World Series with Los Angeles in 2020. It remains to be seen if a strong showing in Mexico could vault him back onto the radar of big league teams looking for a veteran bat.
