- How a former soccer player cracked the Steelers 53-man roster
Every summer, NFL cutdown day delivers unexpected roster survivors. However, few stories in recent memory match the sheer improbability of rookie defender Kevin Jobity Jr. cracking the Pittsburgh Steelers ' initial 53-man squad.
Jobity's journey to professional football reads more like a Hollywood script than a traditional scouting report. Just five years ago, he was playing high school soccer in upstate New York without any intention of hitting the gridiron.

"He only played football because of the COVID year, because football got switched to the spring up in Buffalo ," explained Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo during a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan .
"He was a soccer player. He played soccer in the fall his junior year and the football coach saw him in the hallway and said, 'Hey, why don't you come out for the team?' He came out for the team and boom, now he's five years later he's on an NFL roster."
After converting to football and making his way through Syracuse, Jobity entered Steelers training camp facing nearly impossible odds. Throughout the summer at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, he operated almost exclusively out of sight from the main team rotations, rarely getting opportunities to prove himself in primary packages.

"Like up at training camp, you remember us telling you guys about there's like a varsity field and a JV field? He was on the JV field the entire time. He never went against the runs," Fittipaldo noted, underscoring just how surprising his final roster inclusion was to beat writers and observers alike.
Despite the lack of high-leverage reps during practice sessions, Jobity capitalized on his limited exhibition snaps, notably recording a sack in preseason action against Buffalo.
By combining developmental traits, explosive raw athletic potential, and sheer perseverance, the converted soccer player defied training camp hierarchy to secure his place on the 53-man roster.
