For two seasons, tight end Eric Ebron was part of the Pittsburgh Steelers . He came over from the Indianapolis Colts in 2020 and after a solid first year, fell off in 2021 and hasn't played in the league since. This didn't stop Ebron from having some very strong opinions about the team he was with for two seasons and took some shots at his former teammates.
Ebron went on the Not Just Football Podcast with Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward and as with so many former players, used the platform to take some shots and be a little edgy with their opinions. According to Ebron, the Steelers should have drafted center Creed Humphrey in 2021 in the second round instead of tight end Pat Freiermuth .
"This is what blew me," Ebron said. "Instead of getting [Creed] Humphrey, we get Freiermuth, as if we needed a tight end. We needed to protect this old mother fker, and I don't have a problem with him being the quarterback, but then make the right decisions to protect his a. You feel what I'm saying? We don't need more weapons. He could barely get it to the ones we had. We needed to protect him. I felt like if we could have protected him, he's still Ben Roethlisberger , then we get that extra second or two, create a little space, get open."
As much as the fans love Freiermuth, Ebron probably isn't wrong. The Steelers' offensive line was a disaster in 2021 after losing Maurkice Pouncey , David DeCastro and Alejandro Villanueva gone from the year before. Adding Humphrey would have given the Steelers their next great center and a much better option for Ben Roethlisberger in his final season. Instead, the Steelers rolled the dice on Kendrick Green and Dan Moore Jr. , both of whom turned out to be busts.
