Former Steelers Joe Haden, James Harrison's Mike Tomlin revelations prove why coaching change was needed appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Pittsburgh Steelers have faced significant criticism following a major organizational overhaul. Former safety Juan Thornhill, recently released by the team after an underwhelming performance , publicly criticized former defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. Thornhill stated bluntly in an interview with Steelers Depot that he "didn't enjoy playing for that DC." Austin has since left his position to become a senior defensive assistant with the Arizona Cardinals , departing from a defense that fell short of competitive expectations during a tumultuous period.
As the franchise moves away from that regime, deeper institutional issues have emerged. The decision by longtime head coach Mike Tomlin to step down at the end of last season divided the fanbase. However, revelations from team legends Joe Haden and James Harrison shed light on why a new voice was desperately needed in the locker room. In a recent podcast, as noticed by the Steelers Wire, Haden revealed a troubling lack of accountability that had developed within the facility, pointing to a pervasive "looseness" that ultimately led to mistakes on the field. Haden explained:
"When the vet leeway is getting to a point where it turns almost blatant disrespect to where your team is seeing stud like, 'We can't be moving like this as a team, vet aside.' When you get a new coach in there, he's not rocking. You set a standard from the T.J. Watt s to the Ben Roethlisbergers to anybody on the team where there's no leeway for nobody."

Harrison strongly agreed, going so far as to say that Tomlin's well-known mantra, "the standard is the standard," had lost its meaning.
This cultural shift is already evident under the newly appointed head coach, Mike McCarthy, who takes over from Tomlin after a seven-year playoff victory drought. Star linebacker T.J. Watt recently highlighted a significant change in McCarthy's practice environment . He noted via Ray Fittipaldo on X that the "benches" have been completely removed from the field. Watt, who is embracing the new strict approach after nine years under the previous regime, concluded that this rigid adjustment is a welcome transformation for the team.
