A former wide receiver of the Cleveland Browns has a ton of respect for one of the Pittsburgh Steelers greats.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a long list of great wide receivers, but former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry believes it’s time for one to earn his flowers.
Landry thinks former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is among the top five wide receivers of all time.
“Jerry [Rice], Larry [Fitzgerald], [Terrell Owens], and I’m gonna throw my two dark horses, Anquan Boldin and Hines Ward,” Landry said on the Deebo & Joe podcast . “I watched a ton of Hines Ward. Obviously towards the end of his career, he got bigger, more heavier set, but Hines Ward was an animal.”
Ward recently failed to advance to become a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class for the 10th consecutive year. Many believe it’s a crime that he has yet to earn his gold jacket.
In his career, Ward had 12,083 receiving yards — the only receiver with more than 12,000 career receiving yards and two Super Bowl wins that has not been elected.
However, Ward also made a name for himself as one of the most physical players of all time. His impact as a blocker was so well-known that the NFL changed its rules to prevent blindside blocks downfield, which has come to be known as the Hines Ward Rule.
That is why Landry looked up to Ward for much of his career.
“Hines Ward, I remember this dude broke somebody’s jaw on a crack block,” Landry continued. “The way I blocked was because of Hines Ward.”
Over his 14-year NFL career, Ward was named to four Pro Bowls, was a three-time All-Pro and is on the Steelers’ All-Time Team. He is currently serving as the wide receivers coach at Arizona State.
