Sunderland were beaten 2-1 at Ipswich to see Regis Le Bris ' side begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a disappointing display and defeat, with former Black Cat Clarke securing all three points for the newly-promoted side in the final minutes.
Ipswich took the lead against Sunderland following a costly error from Luke O'Nien, which saw Julio Enciso set-up Emersonn for the opener, before the Black Cats equalised just 15 minutes later with a wonderful free-kick from Nilson Angulo .
With Sunderland failing to carve out opportunities for the winner, another self-inflicted error from Le Bris' side, this time from O'Nien's substitute replacement Omar Alderete , saw Ipswich counterattack and Clarke score a trademark finish of his to send his former employers back to the Stadium of Light empty-handed.
Considering that Clarke featured 114 times in the red-and-white stripes from January 2022 until the summer window of 2024, and notched 49 goal contributions in the process, the Sunderland supporters were extremely frustrated to see the effective winger score similarly as he did on so many occasions for the Black Cats, and then celebrate.
Jack Clarke Explains Why He Celebrated Against Sunderland
Clarke left then-Championship Sunderland for Premier League Ipswich in the latter stages of the summer transfer window two seasons ago in a £20m deal, just weeks after Le Bris' appointment at the Stadium of Light, but failed to realise his top flight dream with a goal amid Ipswich's relegation back to the second tier as the Black Cats won promotion.

With Clarke suffering a difficult season last time out in the Premier League, the former Sunderland star explained after inflicting defeat on his former side that the emotions took over during his cheeky celebrations for his first top flight goal at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon.
When explaining why he celebrated against Sunderland, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo , Ipswich ace Clarke said: "It's sort of bittersweet...
"Even now, it's not sunk in too much in terms of how surreal of a moment it was.
"I'd had it in the back of my head coming in to today that if I did get the opportunity and score, I'd try to be as respectful as possible. I don't know if the moment or the adrenaline took over.

"It felt like it had been a long time coming. I didn't quite manage to do it last time in the Premier League, but probably had a few opportunities to do so (score).

"It was more relief than anything else, and hopefully it can help me and the team kick forward."
Some Sunderland supporters on social media suggested that Clarke should be booed upon his return to the Stadium of Light in the reverse fixture, when Ipswich travel to Wearside on April 10.
On the flipside, other sections of the Black Cats fanbase believed that Clarke was well within his rights to celebrate the goal against his former team, given that it was his first Premier League goal of the 25-year-old's career and that he had been an outstanding player for Sunderland.
Clarke's Ipswich Take Inspiration From Sunderland
Aside from the celebration matter, Clarke also outlined that Sunderland are providing a blueprint for Ipswich this season, as Gary O'Neil's newly-promoted side looks to dodge instant demotion back to the Championship.

Former Tottenham youth product Clarke added: "I think all of us newly-promoted clubs will be looking at what Sunderland did last season and wanting to do something similar.
"Obviously, the last time we came up, all three of the promoted clubs went back down.
"But if you look at last year, Sunderland and Leeds managed to do what many people thought was the unthinkable nowadays.
"Sunderland were above and beyond what anybody could have expected. It gives everybody belief that we can do it and it can be done. It's what we're striving to replicate."
