Ahead of Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies , the Toronto Blue Jays have shuffled the major league roster once again, bringing up reliever Tommy Nance and designating reliever Yariel Rodriguez for assignment.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic had that news on social media. It's the continuation of a frustrating saga for Rodriguez, who was signed to a five-year deal before the 2024 season.

The 29-year-old native out of Cuba started 21 games in 2024, going just 1-8 with a 4.47 ERA. The Blue Jays moved him to the bullpen in 2025, where he performed much better: He went 3-2 with a 3.08 ERA, but after the team went on an offseason spending binge, he became the odd man out, getting designated for assignment.
As Bannon correctly points out, he's owed more than $17 million, so no team is likely to claim him, which means the Blue Jays can assign him to the minor leagues and keep him as depth. In 10 games this season, Rodriguez is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA.
As for Nance, he's now 35 years old and a five-year veteran of the Chicago Cubs , Miami Marlins and Blue Jays. He's gone 5-9 in his career with a 4.29 ERA. He's appeared in 20 games for the Blue Jays this season, going 0-2 with a 3.86.

The Blue Jays (32-34) will host the Phillies (35-30) at 7:07 p.m. ET on Monday at Rogers Centre. Patrick Corbin will take the mound for Toronto while Cristopher Sanchez pitches for Philly. Corbin is 2-2 with a 3.98 ERA while Sanchez is in the mix for the National League Cy Young Award. He's 7-2 with a 1.46 ERA. He's already struck out 103 hitters.
Elsewhere in the news for the Jays
Over the last few days, we've highlighted the rehab appearances for the Jays starting pitchers Dylan Cease , Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber , and we've discussed the eventual roster crunch that is coming to the starting rotation.

However, the bullpen situation also got more interesting on Sunday as reliever Yimi Garcia made another rehab appearance at Single-A Dunedin. He has yet to pitch this season either.
Garcia gave up one hit and struck out one.
The 35-year-old has now made four rehab appearances, pitching to a 10.80 ERA. He's pitched only 3.1 innings, so the results don't really matter as much as the stuff and now he feels after he throws.
