Out of the four former UCF Knights playing in the Las Vegas Summer League, Jaylin Sellers is proving he belongs at the pro level and deserves a roster spot with the Chicago Bulls .
Sellers has looked like a standout two-way player in his three appearances this summer. He's showcased a versatile skill set that impacts the game far beyond what the box score entails.
The former Knight has used his speed to blow past defenders and attack the rim, and is a respectable threat from the three-point line. Sellers is playing within the flow of the offense, making good decisions despite shooting 40.5% from the field.
An underrated aspect of his game is his decision-making. Playmaking isn't a scouted strength of his, but he's made the right plays when he's on the floor. It's the simple assists, like kicking out to the corner shooter or finding a cutting teammate.
Defensively, Sellers has risen to the challenge of guarding the best perimeter scorer on the opposing team, and he's given them problems. He pressures the ball-handler, applying consistent ball pressure and making them uncomfortable. NBA teams value that kind of tenacity, and it's ultimately what helps a player earn playing time.
Chicago's star is Caleb Wilson, whom they selected with the eighth overall pick, but Sellers has quietly cemented himself as the second-best player to watch on the roster. The Bulls' hidden gem was arguably the most effective in Tuesday's victory against the Washington Wizards .
He had his most efficient game in Summer League, scoring 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Sellers thrived in the transition offense, as he was a blur in the open court. Defenders couldn't catch up to him, as he threw down multiple dunks throughout the night.
The 6-foot-5 guard has shown his team's front office that he could be a reliable back-end rotation player on the roster. There could be a battle for the third-string guard spot with Rob Dillingham .
Dillingham is an offensively oriented player, as he has a shifty handle that puts defenders on skates. That's his best attribute, though, and Sellers has shown he is more than just an offensive player in Summer League.
Chicago signed the former Providence Friar to a two-way contract, meaning he'll spend time with the G League affiliate Windy City Bulls. The G League is the perfect opportunity to show sustained excellence in a more competitive environment. He'll play against other two-way players and experienced NBA players.
Sellers will have another chance to further strengthen his case for a roster spot in Chicago against the Los Angeles Lakers . The Bulls and Lakers game will tip off at 6 p.m. EST on Prime Video.
