Liverpool already have a deal in place to sign a forward. He's just scored his ninth goal in just six games - a phenomenal run of form.
Liverpool did a lot of work moving on homegrown talent under Richard Hughes. They sold virtually all of it, really, as just about every homegrown player near the first-team level was moved on.
Only the injury Conor Bradley remains as a genuinely homegrown player who competes at the first-team level. It's something we imagine they'll come to regret quite badly.
Liverpool are already up against their foreign-player quota, for one. They've also just gutted the culture of the side - something Mohamed Salah called out last season. Having players who have been at the club long-term, even as a youth player, makes a significant difference to establishing methods and standards.
The Reds disregarded that in its entirety. But that doesn't mean they can't get it back.
For one, Liverpool have clauses in place to re-sign some of their sold players. Jarell Quansah is a very obvious one with a pure buyback clause, while someone like Tyler Morton has a percentage of the fee going back to the Reds - essentially a discount.
One very interesting ex-player is Trent Koné-Doherty , who left Liverpool back in January for Molde. The winger was right on the cusp of the first-team level at Anfield, only to struggle for any sort of game time under Arne Slot.
He moved on, heading to Norway in an attempt to play regularly and show what he can do. He's certainly doing just that.
Koné-Doherty now has nine goals in his last six games for Molde. That includes hatttricks on his last two starts for the club and he now sits among the top of the league for passing and shooting metrics.
This could end up being a proper breakout season, then. The Irish forward is following in Erling Haaland 's footsteps a bit with that - the Manchester City star scored 16 times in his final Molde season before joining Red Bull Salzburg.
So this is a situation that Liverpool will watch closely. As mentioned by the Athletic , the Reds have both a sell-on clause and a buyback clause for Koné-Doherty and may decide to bring him back if his form continues.
He only turned 20 this summer, too, which certainly leaves the door open for rapid development. Don't write him off just yet, then - Koné-Doherty could be a homegrown star for the Reds yet.
