The Cleveland Guardians will have some big decisions to make across the roster after the team fell short in the playoffs.
Cleveland was able to reach the American League Championship Series, but they lost in six games to the Tampa Bay Rays. Now, the Guardians are entering an offseason with a few big questions to make around the roster .
One of which is what the team does with veteran outfielder Steven Kwan, who has been mentioned in trade rumors again. Kwan was a solid player for the Guardians this past season, but there seems to be a lot of smoke around a deal going down this offseason.
MLB analyst Dayn Perry of CBS Sports discussed landing spots for Kwan, if the Guardians decide to trade him this offseason. Among these, there were four contenders who could seriously make a play to land the outfielder.
The Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Seattle Mariners were all mentioned in this, which could give the Guardians options in trade talks. Of course, there could be other teams involved in the bidding if Kwan is made available as well.
But the time to trade Kwan could make sense, especially with him entering the final year of his contract. Cleveland has typically shown an unwillingness to resign players at high prices over the years, and Kwan could be next to be moved before he can hit free agency.
Kwan also put together another strong season, with him coming off a 5.0 WAR for the second time in his MLB career. The veteran outfielder could provide a lot to any interested team, and the Guardians now have flexibility to work with.
Kwan's another who's been a reliable presence in the trade rumors for some time. Cleveland also has a history of dealing core talents leading up to their walk year, and Kwan is indeed slated for free agency after next season.
The timing would be right, as Kwan is coming off a 5.0-WAR season for the second time in his career. This past season, Kwan hit .282 with three home runs, 32 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases, while posting an OPS of .731.
Kwan is still very good defensively, and he could offer any interested team a Gold Glove-caliber arm in the outfielder. Any of the teams mentioned could be good landing spots for the veteran, and the Guardians could receive a nice haul in return.
