What role will Framber Valdez play in 2026?
The Detroit Tigers entered the 2026 season expecting Framber Valdez to provide stability near the top of their starting rotation. After signing a three-year, $115 million contract, the veteran left-hander arrived with an established track record of durability, postseason experience and an ability to generate ground balls at one of the highest rates in baseball.

His first season in Detroit, however, did not produce the results the organization anticipated.
Valdez finished with a 10-12 record, a 4.03 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 174 innings. He made 31 starts, allowing 170 hits and issuing 67 walks. His 1.36 WHIP was another indication that opposing hitters were reaching base more frequently than Detroit would have preferred.
Those numbers were a departure from the production Valdez established with the Houston Astros, where he developed into an All-Star and one of the more reliable left-handed starters in the American League.
The Tigers are now approaching an offseason in which their rotation could look considerably different from the one that opened 2026. Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize were traded during the summer, leaving Detroit without two pitchers who had previously anchored the staff.

That places additional importance on Valdez entering 2027, although expecting him to replace Skubal's production would be an unrealistic standard.
Instead, Detroit needs Valdez to return to the approach that made him successful in Houston.
One of the more noticeable concerns from his 2026 season was his declining strikeout production. Valdez averaged approximately seven strikeouts per nine innings, down from the level he had maintained during several of his better seasons with the Astros.
Valdez has never depended exclusively on overpowering hitters. His sinker and breaking pitches have traditionally allowed him to induce weak contact, generate double plays and work deep into games without needing an excessive number of strikeouts.

However, the margin for error becomes smaller when hitters are consistently reaching base.
His 67 walks represented approximately 3.5 per nine innings. That rate is not impossible to overcome for a ground-ball pitcher, but it creates situations in which even relatively weak contact can result in runs.
Detroit also needs to examine whether Valdez's pitch sequencing can become less predictable. When opposing hitters anticipate his sinker, they can approach at-bats differently, particularly when he falls behind in the count.
There were encouraging developments near the end of the season.
Valdez produced a 1.93 ERA over 23 1/3 innings in September, allowing fewer runs while showing improved results against opposing lineups. His final start against Washington was not perfect, but he limited the Nationals to two runs over 5 1/3 innings despite issuing three walks.

That late-season performance gives the Tigers something to evaluate heading into spring training.
The organization should also consider its defensive alignment when determining how to maximize Valdez's effectiveness.
Ground-ball pitchers depend heavily on the infield defense behind them. Detroit has several decisions to make regarding its infield configuration, including the long-term positions of Kevin McGonigle and Colt Keith.
Those decisions could have a direct impact on Valdez, particularly if the Tigers intend to continue building around pitchers who generate contact rather than relying exclusively on strikeouts.

The club's young rotation candidates offer another reason why Valdez remains important.
Jackson Jobe, Troy Melton, Keider Montero and River Ryan all bring varying degrees of upside and uncertainty. Having a veteran capable of providing 170 to 190 innings would reduce the burden on younger starters who are still developing their workloads.
Valdez accomplished part of that responsibility in 2026 simply by making 31 starts. The challenge is improving the quality of those innings.
Detroit does not necessarily need him to reproduce his best season in Houston. A pitcher who can consistently work six innings, limit walks and maintain an ERA closer to the mid-3.00s would represent a meaningful improvement over his first season with the Tigers.

That level of production would also make the organization's investment easier to justify.
For a team attempting to return to postseason contention, the development of its young pitchers will remain a significant storyline. But the Tigers cannot expect those players to carry the entire rotation without reliable veteran production.
Valdez has already demonstrated that he can pitch effectively at the highest level. His 2026 season did not erase that track record, although it raised reasonable questions about what Detroit should expect over the remaining two years of his contract.
The Tigers need Valdez to be more than an innings provider in 2027. They need him to become the dependable veteran starter they believed they were acquiring.
