Calvin Johnson has been retired for a decade, and no one has come close to his signature record. In 2012, Johnson set the NFL's single-season receiving mark with 1,964 yards, breaking a Jerry Rice record that had stood since 1995.
Thirteen years later, in an era with an extra regular-season game and rules built to help offenses, the record still hasn't fallen. Cooper Kupp came closest in 2021, finishing 17 yards short across 17 games. Johnson did it in 16. Recently, when asked to name the most exciting player in NFL history, PFN's NFL analyst Ian Cummings went with Megatron.
While a strong argument can be made for a number of NFL legends, from Michael Vick and Barry Sanders to Randy Moss and Deion Sanders, Cummings zeroed in on Johnson.
"He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021, but it still feels like people forget just how freakish, how absurd of a physical talent he was," Cummings said of Johnson. "At 6'5″, 239 [pounds], 36-inch arms, 4.35 speed, 100th percentile explosiveness, he could outrun you, he could outreach you. He had titantic catch-point skills. He was essentially a create-a-wide-receiver [from a video game]."
It's worth noting that Johnson's 4.35-second 40-yard dash at the 2007 NFL Combine is still the fastest time by any player 6'5″ or taller in the event's history.
The Detroit Lions were rarely good during Johnson's prime, which may be why the superstar wideout doesn't get the recognition he deserves. The Lions went 4-12 in 2012, the year Johnson broke the record, and reached the playoffs twice in his entire career. It also weirdly makes his accomplishments even more impressive. Everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was going, but defenses still couldn't stop Johnson.
"Double coverage, triple coverage, it didn't matter," Cummings said. "Calvin Johnson had your number."

From 2011 to 2013, Johnson piled up 5,137 receiving yards, the most any player has totaled in a three-season stretch. He led the league in receiving yards in 2011 and 2012 and earned first-team All-Pro honors all three years. Johnson posted a 92.1 WR Impact Score in 2011 and a cumulative receiving EPA of 134 across the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Johnson walked away from football after the 2015 season at 30, while still playing at an elite level. This decision only added to the mythology. In his final NFL season, Johnson caught 88 passes for 1,214 yards and 9 touchdowns (and posted the 13th-best WR Impact Score in the league), leaving zero doubt about whether he could still dominate.
Johnson became a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer in 2021, and he finished his career with six Pro Bowl selections, four All-Pro selections (including three first-team nods), 11,619 receiving yards, and 83 receiving touchdowns across his nine seasons in Detroit.
"Some players are enthralling, so exciting, that they simply take up permanent real estate in your memory. That's Calvin Johnson for me," Cummings explained.
A decade after his last catch, Johnson's record still stands, and his highlight reel features catch after catch that only he could've made.
