Despite a bad loss to Wisconsin last weekend, there were still several positives the Nittany Lions could take away from the game. While the offense looked labored at times, the defense held up their part of the bargain for most of the game. One player in particular caught the eye, especially with the first major highlight of his career. When he first stepped foot in Happy Valley as a three star freshman, no one expected Josiah Zayas to factor into this season. However, that could be further from the truth after last week's performance.
In last week's game, Zayas had not only his first career interception in the blue and white, but his first career pick six, as he had a pivotal part to play in the Nittany Lions jumping out to a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter. While his team didn't play well at all around him, at the very least Zayas had a breakout performance that he can carry with him throughout the season. What potentially matters more is how PFF decided to look at his performance.
Usually, when PFF grades players, they don't always acknowledge the play of freshmen simply because some do not play often enough to warrant grading. However, the emergence of Josiah Zayas for Penn State put him on PFF's radar...and beyond. Not only was Josiah Zayas' grade of 93 the highest of any freshman last week, it was also the highest grade earned by a Nittany Lions to date this season. Most impressively, that was enough to put him on PFF's Team of the Week as well.
For a three star recruit out of Edison, New Jersey who potentially did not expect to play at all, this milestone is potential proof that the Nittany Lions have a budding star amidst their ranks.
