Daniel Rolovich grew up around the spread-and-shred. Saturday night in El Paso, he finally got to run it.
The true freshman didn't learn he was San Jose State's starting quarterback until after pregame warmups. Nine plays later, Rolovich had his first college touchdown pass, an 11-yarder to fellow true freshman Carson Clark and the Spartans were on their way to a 24-11 Mountain West win over UTEP at the Sun Bowl.
"I figured out I was starting after warmups," said Rolovich. "It just happened to be me and I'm grateful for that."
It was a night of firsts for a kid whose story started long before he did.
Ken Niumatalolo played quarterback at Hawaii from 1987 to 1989. Nick Rolovich, Daniel's father, played the position there in 2000 and 2001.
Years later, the two former Rainbow Warriors quarterbacks met as head coaches. In 2018, Rolovich's Hawaii offense hung 59 points on Niumatalolo's Navy in Honolulu.
Craig Stutzmann was part of that world, coaching under Rolovich at Hawaii and later at Washington State. When Niumatalolo took over at San Jose State in 2024, he hired Stutzmann to run the spread-and-shred, a descendant of the attack that once torched his Midshipmen.
Daniel was around it the whole time. Niumatalolo said the staff watched him grow up as a little kid inside the offense.
"I grew up around this system, I grew up around these guys," said Rolovich. "I think it's awesome that I get to keep doing that and come out here and win games with them."
That circle didn't hand him the job. With Luke Weaver banged up and the offense in need of what Niumatalolo called "a spark," the decision came down to Rolovich and redshirt freshman Robert McDaniel through Saturday's final walkthroughs.
"As great a relationship that Craig has with Daniel, we were going to do what we thought was right for the team," said Niumatalolo. "Craig just went with his gut at the end."
"You've got to give the kid credit," said Niumatalolo. "Last time that kid played was in high school."
His father's voice made the trip, too.
"He gives me one snap and clear it," said Rolovich, paraphrasing his dad. "Play a play, that play's over, you can't affect it, it doesn't affect the next play."
Rolovich, a mid-year enrollee, settled in against UTEP after what he called a first half of "just me getting my bearings."
In his first Division 1 level game, Rolovich finished with 193 passing yards, a touchdown and no interceptions while running for 39 more. He is the Spartans' second true freshman starter at quarterback in 11 months, following Tama Amisone (now a receiver) in last season's Fresno State finale.
In a transfer portal world, the two key pieces of San Jose State's passing game Saturday came straight out of high school.
That's no accident. Niumatalolo said the Rolovich family trusted Stutzmann to "take care of their son, not just on the field, but off the field."
Clark was a different kind of win.
"Carson obviously was a huge get," said Niumatalolo. "We didn't know if we had a shot at him."
Clark has since become the go-to target. Against UTEP Saturday night, Clark caught five passes for 104 yards for his first 100-yard game.
Two freshmen, one connection and a staff that recruited the old-fashioned way: relationships, trust and a coordinator who knew the quarterback before the quarterback knew a Cover 2.
They had plenty of help, of course. With Jabari Bates out, Viliami "Juju" Teu ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
Then there was the Spartan defense. Eleven sacks. Fourteen tackles for loss. UTEP QB Raymond Moore III went down eight times by himself and UTEP's backfield was constantly stymied.
"We had a couple guys down, but it's next man up," said defensive end standout Justin Stearns. "Rolo and Juju and all the offense, they did a phenomenal job."
San Jose State (4-3, 2-1) visits Nevada on October 24th, where Weaver's health may still shape what comes next at quarterback, though Niumatalolo indicated they'd likely stick with Rolovich at this point.
But for one night, a story that began in Honolulu nearly four decades ago turned a page. The kid who grew up around the offense was finally running it.
