Robert Garcia is nearing the next phase of his recovery, with the Texas Rangers preparing to send the left-hander on a minor-league rehab assignment.
Garcia has been sidelined since April 23 because of inflammation in his left rotator cuff, but his latest throwing session provided another encouraging sign that his return is approaching.

The Rangers had Garcia face several of their hitters during a live batting-practice session Wednesday, including Nicky Lopez , Josh Jung and Kyle Higashioka . The appearance represented a significant checkpoint for the reliever, who has spent several months working his way back from the shoulder issue.
Rather than immediately returning Garcia to the major-league bullpen, Texas plans to use a rehab assignment to evaluate how his arm responds to game action.
Garcia is expected to begin that assignment as soon as Saturday. The current plan calls for him to make two or three appearances in the minors before the Rangers determine whether he is ready to rejoin the major-league roster.
The rehab outings should give Texas an opportunity to evaluate more than just Garcia's health. The Rangers will also want to see whether his command, stuff and overall effectiveness have returned to the level necessary for him to contribute out of the bullpen.

That distinction is important for a team approaching the latter portion of the season.
Getting Garcia back on the mound is one objective, but the Rangers need him to be capable of providing meaningful innings once he returns. His rehab assignment should therefore serve as the final test before the club makes a decision on his activation.
For Garcia, Wednesday's session was another chance to regain the rhythm of facing hitters after spending an extended period away from competitive action. Live batting practice can provide a useful bridge between bullpen sessions and actual games, allowing a pitcher to test his pitches and delivery against hitters while continuing to monitor his arm.
The left-hander will now shift his attention toward facing opposing hitters in game situations.

The Rangers will likely take a measured approach with Garcia throughout the rehab process. His shoulder health remains the primary concern after the lengthy absence, but his ability to perform once he returns will also factor into the club's decision.
Garcia's potential return could provide Texas with another option for its pitching staff as the team navigates the final stretch of the season. Before he can help the Rangers at the major-league level, however, he must first demonstrate that he is ready for the workload and intensity of regular game action.
His upcoming rehab assignment should provide that opportunity.
With the live batting-practice session now behind him, Garcia is entering the final stages of his recovery. Assuming his arm responds well to the upcoming appearances, the Rangers could soon have their left-hander back in the bullpen.

For now, the focus remains on building him up properly and making sure he can return without setbacks. Wednesday's session was another positive checkpoint, but the upcoming rehab games will provide the clearest indication of how close Garcia is to making his return.
