The Minnesota Vikings selected former Pittsburgh tight end Gavin Bartholomew in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with hopes of developing him into a reliable contributor, but those plans were put on hold after a back injury sidelined him for the entirety of his rookie season. Instead of gaining valuable experience, Bartholomew was forced to focus on recovery while watching the rest of the tight end room develop.
Now healthy entering his sophomore season, the 23-year-old is making up for lost time. Bartholomew has emerged as one of the early standouts of Vikings training camp, consistently drawing attention with his playmaking ability. While training camp performances don't guarantee regular-season success, they can open doors for players fighting to establish themselves on the depth chart. That's exactly what Bartholomew appears to be doing.

At six-foot-five and 250 pounds, Bartholomew possesses the prototypical size team's covet at the position. He's shown the ability to work the middle of the field as a receiver while also providing the versatility needed to contribute as an in-line tight end.
Fortunately for Bartholomew, the opportunity is certainly there. Minnesota's tight end room is headlined by veteran T.J. Hockenson , who remains one of the league's more accomplished players at the position but is entering a stage of his career where managing his workload becomes increasingly important as his production and availability continue to decline. Josh Oliver has firmly established himself as one of the league's better blocking tight ends and remains an important piece of the Vikings' offensive identity.
Behind those two, however, the competition for snaps remains wide open. That gives Bartholomew a legitimate chance to earn meaningful playing time if he continues to impress throughout training camp and the preseason.
The former Pittsburgh Panther entered the league after putting together a productive college career that showcased his all-around skill set. During his final collegiate season, he caught 38 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns, serving as a dependable target in the Panthers ' passing attack. While those numbers don't jump off the page compared to some of college football's elite receiving tight ends, they reflected a player capable of contributing in multiple ways rather than serving as a one-dimensional pass catcher.

That versatility is something the Vikings value. Head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense asks tight ends to wear multiple hats. They must be capable of creating mismatches in the passing game, contributing in the run game and handling a variety of assignments depending on personnel packages. Bartholomew's combination of size, hands and willingness to block gives him a chance to fit that mold.
Perhaps the biggest positive development is simply seeing him back on the field. Missing an entire rookie season can significantly slow a player's development, particularly at a position as demanding as tight end. Instead of learning through in-game reps, Bartholomew had to spend his first professional season rehabbing and studying the game from afar. Now, he's finally getting the opportunity to translate that preparation into on-field production.
There's still plenty of work to be done before roster spots and playing time are finalized, but Bartholomew has already put himself on the radar.
