The Denver Broncos went into preseason with two long snappers on their offseason roster: incumbent starter Mitchell Fraboni and undrafted rookie Luke Basso. Denver came out of preseason with zero long snappers.
Fraboni and Basso were both waived on Sunday when the team trimmed down to an initial 53-man roster . Broncos general manager George Paton explained the decision on Sunday evening.
"Mitch is going to be on our practice squad," Paton said. "He'll be a practice-squad veteran. They don't have to clear waivers. It just provides flexibility within the roster throughout the season when they start here, and so that's all it was."
Because he is a vested veteran, Fraboni will not have to clear waivers and can directly return to Denver's practice squad. He can be elevated to the game-day roster up to three times, and Fraboni figures to eventually be fully promoted to the active roster. The Broncos are using the same roster workaround with fullback Adam Prentice .
"It just gives us flexibility," Paton said. "The expanded practice squad allows that. You can elevate. There are certain things you can do with your roster. It's just part of it, the roster management."
It's a smart move from Denver, essentially giving the team two more roster spots for the first three weeks of the regular season as the 53-man roster is ironed out.
