The Georgia Bulldogs season is right around the corner, and if the scorching weather was not enough of an indicator that it's nearly football time in the South, the latest huge step is going to go down this coming week.
With the calendar now turned to August, the Bulldogs are getting out there on the practice field this week, reporting for fall camp and putting on the pads for the first time since the spring. Anticipation is as high as ever, with position battles to monitor, player development to watch, and seeing where all the puzzle pieces are fitting for both the offense and the defense.
While Georgia has one of the better rosters in all of college football, things are not exactly perfect and a couple of rooms will be watched very closely as fans try to figure out who is going to step up where.
Wide Receivers
There may be no group that has been more scrutinized this offseason than the wide receivers, with very little experience carrying over from last year and some new faces like transfer wide receiver Isiah Canion leading a group that includes guys who played in small roles last season like Sacovie White-Helton, CJ Wiley, and others.
The Bulldogs are desperate for someone to emerge in this group of pass catchers that contains so many wild cards, and the ceiling of this team may depend on it. Beyond this unit as a whole, there are two true freshmen who look in line for real roles, something which they will have to prove they're ready for.
Zykie Helton and Kaiden Prothro
Starting along the offensive line in the SEC -- especially somewhere like Georgia -- is rare, but Helton has done nothing but create buzz since he stepped foot onto campus, and it seems like he is in line to start right away.
He will have to show that he is ready, but all indications to this point have been that he is.
Prothro is a little bit more of a complicated situation, moving from tight end to the slot this spring largely because of the crowded tight end room. At 6-foot-6, he has the chance to be an absolutely dominant force from there and a matchup nightmare, but he will also have to show that the moment won't be too big for such a young player.
Fans will be watching these two closely when camp gets started this week.
