Before the start of the 2025 college football season, Deion Sanders made it clear to his new transfers that wearing any gear from their previous school would not be acceptable. He reiterated to them that how you leave or how you behave once you leave matters.
When a player leaves, and does so in a professional manner, the future interactions will be amicable. After a devastating loss to Arizona State last season, the post-game interaction between Sanders and ASU turned NFL receiver Jordyn Tyson went viral.
The former Colorado player was a roster casualty when Sanders brought his Louis Luggage to Boulder. There were some comments made suggesting Sanders did not even try to get to know Tyson before he left. After the 42-17 loss, Sanders outlined how Tyson came to apologize. Sanders acknowledged he had nothing to apologize for, but the respect from that interaction was noticeable.
Former Buffs defensive tackle Tawfiq Thomas took to social media recently to provide unnecessary bulletin board material. The post includes Thomas in head-to-toe Georgia Tech gear, smiling with a studded grill, in front of a framed poster showing the 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech last season. One of the few games Thomas played in for Colorado, registering two tackles. A bold move for someone who wasn't exactly a major contributor before he left for Atlanta.
One CU alumni took exception to Thomas' tweet. Matt McChesney, who is often vocal regarding the state of the Buffaloes, lit up the one-time Buffs reserve.
"I said the pride tradition of the Colorado Buffaloes would not be entrusted to the timid or the f—ing weak? This is some timid weak s—t right here, and I'm glad he's not here anymore," McChesney said on his Zero 2 Sixty podcast . "And now you can go prove to him why he couldn't hack it in Boulder when you go to Atlanta and beat the s—t out of this kid. If this kid gets p—ed off, that sucks for him. I don't give a s—t."
In two seasons with the Buffaloes, Thomas was active for 17 games with 32 tackles (4 for loss) and a sack. The bulk of that production came two years ago when Colorado finished 9-4 with a blowout loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl. Most players thrived during the one good CU season, which included Travis Hunter winning a Heisman Trophy. The season was so good that Shedeur Sanders and Hunter got their numbers retired.
McChesney would go on to claim Thomas is one of 'those guys'. "The kid obviously has spoiled (sour) grapes. The coach f—ed me, guys. Oh, the coach booked me over. That's why I'm not there anymore. That's him. That's this guy."
McChesney doubled down with a tone of 'keep that same energy'. Suggesting we'll see in September who has the better team. A bold statement considering the task ahead. This story should add fuel to this match-up, but who will come out on top is still very much up in the air.
Deion Sanders and his Buffaloes will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech for the opener. The game should prove to be the most difficult of the non-conference schedule. In a season that requires an improved result, how Colorado plays down south could set the table for the rest of the season.
