Giannis Antetokounmpo won’t be going to a new team ahead of the 3 p.m. Thursday trade deadline. The Bucks have indicated to teams they won’t be trading their two-time MVP in the next few hours, per ESPN’s Shams Charania .
Antetokounmpo trade rumors have been the main storyline of the NBA leading up to the deadline. But Milwaukee will instead wait until the offseason to trade Antetokounmpo. The Bucks can likely get better offers from teams instead of at this year’s deadline, though teams were certainly trying to land the All-Star.
The Bucks are 20-29 and in 12th place in the East, plus Antetokounmpo hasn’t played in a game since Jan. 23 due to a calf injury. It remains to be seen what the plan is for when Antetokounmpo is ready to play again, but the Bucks are unlikely to be serious contenders amid their struggles all season.
Antetokounmpo will be a prime trade candidate this offseason with teams lining up for his services. The Warriors, Timberwolves , Heat, Knicks and others were rumored to be interested and calling the Bucks for a potential trade. They’ll likely be interested once again in the offseason, when Milwaukee can ask for more assets for Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo is still playing great basketball, averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. But the Bucks haven’t been able to compete with him in recent seasons, which has led to all the trade rumors.
