- The Giants’ depleted secondary just got a badly needed break

Jason Pinnock was a full participant Thursday after being limited Wednesday with a concussion. The Giants still have several important defensive backs missing practice, but one of their direct replacement options is making progress.
Tyler Nubin remained out with a neck injury, while rookie cornerback Colton Hood again didn't practice because of a concussion. Pinnock's improvement doesn't erase either absence. It gives New York a better chance to cover a safety assignment without asking another position group to absorb the entire adjustment.
The current depth chart lists Pinnock directly behind Nubin at strong safety. His availability could help at the position where the starter has missed consecutive practices, rather than simply add a healthy body somewhere in the secondary.

Pinnock was inactive for Sunday's 27-27 tie at Washington. His 2026 record includes one appearance and no starts, so New York shouldn't treat him as somebody who has already handled a large weekly defensive workload this season.
The experience matters, but the current preparation matters more. Returning to full participation allows the staff to evaluate what he can handle now, rather than rely on his earlier Giants tenure or a familiar name.

The Thursday report contains no final game designation. Full participation also shouldn't be presented as confirmed completion of the concussion protocol. Those are separate pieces of information, and the Giants had not supplied a Friday update at this article's morning cutoff.
New York also still needs answers elsewhere. Hood's situation concerns the cornerback group, not the same assignment Pinnock would inherit from Nubin. Greg Newsome II remained limited with a groin injury Thursday. One improved safety report doesn't make the entire defensive backfield healthy.
For John Harbaugh's staff, the next step is establishing who can actually play against New Orleans and which assignments those players can execute. Pinnock's progress makes that preparation less restrictive. Friday's report and the eventual game-day roster will determine whether it becomes help on the field.
