Cam Skattebo's status for Sunday's game in Philadelphia may be in doubt, but New York Giants coach John Harbaugh says he isn't worried about the team's running back room.
Harbaugh said he feels "very confident" in the team's running back situation, even though the Giants could be without two backs for their game against the Eagles.
The Giants placed Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve during their bye week, and Devin Singletary could be their only healthy running back with NFL game reps this year. They plucked Greg Desrosiers from the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad, signed Phil Mafah and re-signed Eric Gray to their practice squad.
John Harbaugh Is 'Very Confident' in the Running Back Situation
Skattebo injured his hamstring on the Giants' penultimate offensive play in their 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans. He is "day-to-day," per Harbaugh, but the Giants coach hasn't lost faith in Singletary or the players they added.
"I feel very confident about the running back situation," Harbaugh said. "I like the guys we've got. Obviously, (Singletary's) been here. We've got some guys that have been here in the past, too, that we brought in, as you know, that were here … so I feel good about it."
The Giants' bye was especially well-timed, considering Skattebo's and Tracy's injuries. Harbaugh raved about Desrosiers' skill, and he believes Gray and Mafah will be up to speed in time for Sunday.
"Those guys are in practice," Harbaugh said. "They've got two practices now, and if they have to go, they'll definitely be ready to roll."
John Harbaugh: Trading Early Is a 'Luxury' the Giants May Not Have
It's no secret the Giants are trying to land Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. They also have been linked to Tennessee Titans veteran Tony Pollard and would surely get in the mix to acquire Derrick Henry if the Harbaugh's former team, the reeling Baltimore Ravens, made him available.
Complicating matters, the Giants play two division games in a five-day span, and the Nov. 10 trade deadline falls between them. The second is next Thursday night against the Washington Commanders.
Given their injuries, the Giants could use an upgrade at running back, but Harbaugh acknowledged a trade may not come in time to help in either game
"You'd rather make a trade as early as you can because you have the player there longer to prepare for the next game," Harbaugh said. "But you don't always have that luxury."
