The New York Giants made a bold choice on Tuesday by handing a starting cornerback a massive new contract. This move locks up Greg Newsome for three years with a total value of $46 million. NFL insider Jordan Schultz broke the news on his official X account, stating, "Sources: Giants and CB Greg Newsome have agreed to a 3-yr $46 million extension with $32m Guaranteed." That is a huge sum of money for a player who only joined the team in March.
Many fans might wonder why the team is paying so much for someone they just signed to a one-year deal. ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed the details, noting that the extension includes $32 million in guaranteed cash. The Giants paid Newsome just $8 million for his first year, yet now they are betting big on his future. Giants reporter Connor Hughes wrote on X that, "The Giants lock in Greg Newsome." This deal signals that the front office believes he is ready to be a long-term piece of the puzzle.

A Risky Bet on a Reclamation Project
This contract is not without its critics or history. Heavy.com pointed out that Newsome was a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2021 but struggled there before spending the 2025 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bleacher Report's Moe Moton predicted this deal would be the Giants' "Biggest Bust" in 2026 if Newsome does not improve his coverage. Moton wrote that the player has allowed nine touchdowns and posted passer ratings above 100 over the last two seasons.
Despite those past struggles, the Giants see potential. The team is betting that the defense under Dennard Wilson can help him find a home. Connor Hughes called it a "quite the reclamation story" on social media. The risk is real, but the reward could be a shutdown corner for the next three years. If he fails, the $32 million guaranteed is a heavy price to pay for a mistake.
With this new deal in place, the focus shifts to the field. The Giants face a tough test on Sunday, Nov. 8, when they travel to play the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. They need their secondary to be ready for the high-powered offense the Eagles bring. Newsome played in only six games for the Giants before this extension., so the team is asking him to step up immediately.

The numbers show a clear path forward. If Newsome can cut down on the big plays he gave up in Cleveland and Jacksonville, this $46 million investment will look like a masterstroke. If he cannot, the critics will have a loud voice. The clock is ticking, and the next game against the Eagles will be the first real test of this new contract.
